Seven Months In, and the 2027 AI Budget Is Already Stale
Seven months into 2026, the number I keep coming back to is a procurement number. @GartnerInc raised its worldwide #ITSpending pending forecast on 27 July to $6.37 trillion, up 14.2 percent from 2025. #AI accounts for $2.59 trillion of it, a 47 percent jump. End-user spend on AI models and platforms alone moves from $39 billion last year to $64 billion this year.
Then Sam Altman (@sama) told the Singularity University Summit in July that the next 6 months would bring "faster progress on the models than we did in the past two years."
If he is close to right, most 2027 budgets being drafted over the next eight weeks are already stale.
Since January, I’ve seen firsthand how Agents stopped being demos, #MCP turned into boring infrastructure! Gartner expects 40% of enterprise applications to include task-specific agents by the end of 2026. More agent identity and governance specifications landed in the first half of this year than in the entire prior history of the field.
The failure rate stayed ugly. Gartner still projects more than 40% of #AgenticAI projects will be canceled by 2027 on escalating costs, unclear #ROI, and weak risk controls.
One thing I want to push back on. The "88% of pilots never reach production" line shows up in nearly every board deck I read. It measures how many proofs of concept graduate, which is a different question from what they returned. CFOs have started catching that, and it is costing credibility for the people quoting it.
2027 planning kicks off in most enterprises between Aug and Oct. Forrester's 2027 Budget Planning Guide found more than 80% of leaders expecting budget increases, with a quarter anticipating growth of 10% or more. Sharyn Leaver, their chief research officer, said the organizations that outperform in 2027 "won't be those that spend the most on AI."
Four things I would fight for in the plan:
1️⃣ Token consumption treated as a variable operating cost with a named owner. A Q1 estimate can double by Q3 without a single new tool purchased.
2️⃣ Funding for the context layer. Agents cannot act on what they cannot read, and most enterprise knowledge is still invisible to them.
3️⃣ An accountable owner per agent, carrying a P&L. Programs without one are over-represented in the negative-ROI cohort.
4️⃣ Model portability. Frontier leadership rotates every few months now. If switching providers means rewriting integrations, you have bought a hostage situation.
2026 delivered real wins, all of them small, and the board wants a P&L number by Q2 2027.
