I enjoyed sharing this paper with the generous audience at @IMC_Leeds. That #ItsPersonalimc was standing-room only throughout the series shows the continued fascination with mystics and their experiences of divinity!

Now Amanda Langley on Agnes Blannbekin and her interactions with Christ: asking whether the mystic herself “mattered” in the proximity relationship with Christ #s653 #ItsPersonalIMC #IMC2019
Ending the #ItsPersonalimc series with a paper from @ellisamitylight on the Difficult Holiness of Christina the Astonishing. Their paper focuses on community reactions, and the negative feelings that can arise in encounters with the divine.

Excellent paper on Gertrude of Helfta and manuscript culture from Prof. Racha Kirakosian of @HarvardMedieval at @IMC_Leeds. Her work on the way redactions are legitimized in the creation of copies is fascinating and greatly needed!

MK’s mystical marriage is this spiritual rather than sexual, domestic and familial rather than erotic and familiar. Even the embrace is non-somatic; the arms are the arms of the soul, a kind of “cosmic cuddle” #s653 #ItsPersonalIMC #IMC2019
@medievalk argues that even with the Eucharist, MK focuses on the ritualistic element rather than the somatic- the beholding rather than the ingesting; the ocular rather than the oral #s653 #ItsPersonalIMC #IMC2019
MK’s book reiterates the connection between lecherous temptation and divine punishment, with instances of sexual and spiritual torture, eg. she is exposed to repeated visions of men’s genitals which “delighted her against her will” #s653 #ItsPersonalIMC #IMC2019
@medievalk asks us to consider the somaticism of late-med piety on a more individual basis, arguing that @RealMargery eschews typically somatic or sexual encounters with Christ as she associates these experiences with pre-conversion life #s653 #ItsPersonalIMC #IMC2019
Final paper of #s653 is @medievalk on ‘Sex and Chastity in Margery Kempe and other Late Medieval Female Mystics’ #ItsPersonalIMC #IMC2019
Agnes enters into dialogue with Christ by seeking out a visionary state with a concentration of the wills #s653 #ItsPersonalIMC #IMC2019
