#JASSNBE is grateful to be learning from @IsaacMurdoch1 and @KanahusFreedom today abt land title, resource extraction, violence against Indigenous people, colonialism & solidarity and action. #JASSlearns
Thank you to @woodlandcc for a phenomenal learning experience on our virtual field trip yesterday with #JASSNBE students. Our facilitators were exceptional and spent so much time with us for the Q&A. We are grateful to be able to learn with you.
Thanks to quadmesters it is my favourite time of year already- I conference with students and ask them to talk about what they learned & unlearned in #JASSNBE Here are some of their responses (thread)
#JASSNBE got to participate in a livestream with THE @notoriouscree and my favourites parts were when he beatboxed with a traditional flute & learning that 5 hoops=the coming together of spirit, mind, body & ancestors. Incredible opportunity TY!

Listening to my #JASSNBE Gr11 College Ss as they collaborate virtually in breakout rooms to plan podcasts about cultural appropriation and I have to say that despite the hardest year I’ve ever experienced, STUDENTS ROCK. I’m so proud of their perseverance & critical thinking
During course consolidations a common idea that Ss share is how grateful they are that #JASSNBE is a mandatory course @JeanAugustineSS b/c they learned so much, unlearned so much & grew so much but would not have chosen to take it. This is why NBE should be mandatory across Peel!
@clclyne @dumont_marilyn I LOVE this collection of poems from @dumont_marilyn And we use that specific John A. poem in Grade 12 University English @JASSVoice where Ss connect to all the learning they did in our (mandatory) First Nations, Métis and Inuit Grade 11 English course! #JASSNBE
I just had an awesome session about analysis doing a live Meet with my #JASSNBE class using JamBoard. Ss were able to post their ideas on colour-coded sticky notes as we worked through the lesson & I recorded the lesson to share with Ss who could not join us.

Had my first #JASSNBE breakout Google Meet just now with six amazing Ss talking about land disputes. Blown away by their passion and insights & I’m reminded how much I love being a teacher. 😭
A huge thank you to the incredible @michifman who video conferenced w Ss and Ts yesterday from @JeanAugustineSS and @DavidSuzukiSS to talk about his memoir From the Ashes. He was as open and brilliant as his book. We are all in awe. #JASSNBE
Curious to hear what #JASSNBE podcasts sound like @JeanAugustineSS ? Check out the latest episode of 63Three to hear four students make a case for @DebbieDonsky choosing their literature circle novels as her next must read!

Additional thanks to @rosemarie_vulic @laralevay @Ms_Szoboszlai Ms. Crawford @ruth_iyeke Mr. Travaglio who were our incredible guests for period 4 podcasts today for #JASSNBE Your presence made the experience so much richer for Ss. #grateful #JASSlearns
Gr11 #JASSNBE S is 10 chapters ahead of his lit circle group reading Son of a Trickster by Eden Robinson & declared “I can’t help it! I can’t stop reading! This book isn’t like anything I’ve ever read before!” He already made a note to pick up Trickster Drift next. #JASSlearns
#JASSNBE Ss in a lit circle reading The Break by @katherenav are enthralled & agreed overwhelmingly today to adjust their reading calendar so they can “just read”. They occasionally pause to passionately share, compare and predict, then dive back in. #JASSlearns ❤️
Learning about structure, audience and impact when creating websites #JASSNBE with @JASSInnovation so we can create our own about cultural appropriation.

Tried a new strategy of co-constructing success criteria with #JASSNBE They started in small groups with examples of the task then built a class consensus. The best part was listening to them argue , thoughtfully, about the criteria.

Feeling privileged to learn from Ss who were asked to blog about personal connections to @davidbabcock2 ‘s lesson on Grandfather Teachings. From sunnahs to wudhu to Satnaam to Vand Chakha to agarbatti, our learning is richer because of our experiences and cultures. #JASSNBE
Lots of learning happening in #JASSNBE as we work with the @CanGeo Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada floor map. Ss have questions to answer but so many more questions are now being generated from their curiosity interacting with the map. #JASSlearns

Accessing student prior knowledge in #JASSNBE by asking what they THINK they know and what they want to know. This makes it safer to address misconceptions as they correct assumptions and build knowledge this semester.

And my favourite part of teaching #JASSNBE this last semester? How much I continue to learn from my students, my colleagues and from the incredible resources @JASSInnovation brings in to support our program. #JASSlearns
