Janine Milne: What advice would you give emerging African short story writers who are battling to find recognition for their work on the international literary scene? Lisa-Anne Julien: The advice I would give to emerging writers is the advice I give to myself almost every day – Just keep writing. I can’t remember which famous author said – “be ready when the luck shows up”. So, it’s important to keep at it and get to the end of that messy first draft. Then enjoy the magic of watching the revised draft emerge. But let’s be honest – the luck might never show up. But the work still has to endure because the story demands that it be brought into the world. The calling isn’t to please an international audience but to respond to something deep inside oneself that is asking to be revealed. This thing has something to say about life and what it means to be human. Having said that, writers need to be read, and stories need to be read. A story comes alive in the imagination of a reader. So, we must put our stories out into the world. Alongside sending submissions to international publications, we can also share them on the many platforms that exist. Share on socials, on Substack, make video/audio clips on TikTok etc. Revel in that accomplishment. Beat your own drum and dance to our own music. https://t.co/ttSjfhLf5m #ajaata #BHIMFEST26 #Canucks
