Case Concerning the Legal Consequences of the 1925 Anglo-Italian Transfer of Jubaland (Jubaland v. United Kingdom and Italy)
Britain had no legal authority to transfer Jubaland to Italy in 1925. The transfer was therefore a transfer of colonial administration, not a legitimate transfer of sovereignty, because Britain acquired authority through protection and administration rather than through sovereignty. Therefore, if Britain lacked sovereign title, it could not transfer sovereignty to Italy. As a result, the people of Jubaland could bring a legal claim against Britain because Somali communities in Jubaland possessed political authority before British rule.

Before the Holocaust, Germany carried out what many historians consider the first genocide of the 20th century against the Herero and Nama peoples in Namibia. Tens of thousands were killed through mass executions, forced displacement, and concentration camps.

But the question remains: given #Jubaland's current political and security challenges, how can such an ambitious vision become a reality?
The answer is that transformation does not begin with luxury resorts; it begins with creating the conditions that make investment and development possible.
Jubaland's first priority must be stability. No international investor will commit billions, and no tourist will choose a destination, without confidence in security, political predictability, and the rule of law. Therefore, the foundation of any economic transformation must be a strong security framework, effective institutions, and a political environment where disagreements are resolved through dialogue and lawful processes.
The development of Jubaland's coastline must therefore be approached as a long-term national project. The first phase should focus on building the foundations: improving security, strengthening governance, investing in infrastructure, expanding reliable electricity and water supply, and creating a legal framework that encourages responsible investment.
Once these foundations are established, Jubaland can gradually unlock the economic potential of its coastline. Initial investments may begin with smaller-scale tourism projects, eco-tourism, domestic tourism, and regional visitors before progressing towards internationally recognised luxury destinations.
The objective is not simply to build hotels. It is to create an entire coastal economy: hospitality, fisheries, transport, construction, agriculture, renewable energy, vocational training, and local entrepreneurship.
Jubaland possesses assets that many regions would consider strategic advantages: a coastline, marine resources, cultural heritage, strategic location, and a young population. The challenge is not the absence of opportunity; it is creating the political and security environment in which that opportunity can be transformed into reality.
Leadership is not about promising what is impossible today. It is about building the sequence of steps that makes what seems impossible tomorrow achievable. #Jubaland #Somalia
Leadership is about recognising opportunity where others see only potential.
Jubaland's coastline is not merely a natural treasure—it is a strategic economic asset capable of transforming our future.
Were I given the privilege of leading Jubaland, I would champion a bold national tourism strategy that develops our pristine beaches into globally renowned luxury destinations.
With Somali-class architecture, sustainable planning and international investment, Jubaland would emerge as one of the world's premier coastal destinations, welcoming millions of visitors every year, creating high-quality employment and generating billions in sustainable national income.

#UPDATE: North East Somalia Parliament Speaker Removes Immunity of MP Fahiima Quuje After Her Defection to Somaliland
The Speaker of the North East Somalia Parliament has announced the removal of parliamentary immunity from lawmaker Fahiima Yuusuf Quuje following her decision to join Somaliland, accusing her of undermining the administration she had sworn to serve.
“Fahiima Yuusuf Quuje has become an enemy of the North East Somalia administration. She has destroyed what she took an oath to protect,” the Speaker said in a statement, referring to the former lawmaker’s move to Somaliland.
The decision comes after Quuje publicly announced her alignment with Somaliland, a move that has triggered political controversy in the region. Her defection has drawn strong criticism from officials within the North East Somalia administration, who argue that her actions conflict with her responsibilities as a member of parliament.
The parliamentary leadership said the removal of her immunity was taken as a result of her political shift and alleged violation of her obligations as a representative of the administration.
Quuje, who previously served as a prominent figure during the 2023 conflict in Las Anod between Somaliland forces and local armed groups opposing Somaliland’s control, has since become a central figure in renewed political tensions between Somaliland and North East Somalia.
Her move to Somaliland has been welcomed by Somaliland officials, while authorities in North East Somalia have condemned the decision.
