Growing up, every other child would come to school wearing their church’s wristband. As Catholics, we either wore our rosaries or medals around our necks, and for some strange reason, this made some teachers uncomfortable. They would tell us to hide our rosaries and medals, yet never tell the Protestant children to remove their church wristbands. When we prayed in public with people of other faiths and began by making the Sign of the Cross, we often got hostile stares. Because of this, many of us became ashamed to publicly profess our faith. I’m happy to say that I’m no longer that person. I’ve gone from being shy about making the Sign of the Cross in public to making it without hesitation. And when I’m asked to lead a prayer, I don’t shy away from invoking the Holy Spirit: “Come, O Holy Spirit, and fill the hearts of Your faithful.” I’ve gone from hiding my Rosary beads to praying the Rosary publicly, wherever I find myself. Our faith is beautiful, and we should never allow anyone to intimidate or cower us into hiding it. If the saints had been ashamed to publicly profess their faith, I don’t think the Church would be standing today. It is our collective responsibility as Catholics to proudly profess our faith and bear witness to Christ before the world. We are Catholic.
