This is the reality that 17-year-old Yehor from the Kherson region faced in a Russian militarized camp last summer. He was among 250 Ukrainian teenagers sent there under the guise of "recreation." Instead, every one of them was forced to pray five times a day for the very people murdering their fellow Ukrainians. In the summer of 2025, Yehor went to the "Korsun" camp in occupied Crimea, expecting a simple summer break. But instead of typical camp activities, counselors forced the children to weave camouflage nets for the Russian army. After their labor, the children were sent to mandatory prayers for the success of Russian soldiers. We have heard countless stories from children rescued from the occupied territories about forced "Conversations about Important Things" (state-mandated indoctrination classes) and surveys asking which military branch they wished to join. Yehor went through all of this. But his story reveals yet another instrument of Russian military propaganda: the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). It is time to call things by their true names. The ROC is not merely a "church that supports the regime." It is an active participant in the occupation. Save Ukraine has documented how children are systematically indoctrinated through Orthodox camps, prayers "for Russian soldiers," and religious events where they are told who their "enemy" is and who their "savior" is. As Viktor Yelensky, head of the State Service for Ethnopolitics, stated: the ROC has become an "appendage of the Russian military machine." In occupied schools, churches, and camps, children are relentlessly told that "there are no human beings among Ukrainians — only Nazis." This is a deliberate attempt to destroy the identity of an entire generation of Ukrainians. Yehor stood his ground. He kept Ukraine alive within himself: he hid a second phone with a Ukrainian SIM card and the government app Diia. He concealed it every time he left the house, knowing that if it were discovered, he could be taken to a "basement" (a detention and torture chamber). Eventually, the young man made the brave decision to flee, and the Save Ukraine team helped him reach safety. But how many of our children are still trapped there? According to Ukrinform, in the three years since the invasion, 976 people have been killed and over 6,000 wounded in the liberated areas of the Kherson region alone. These are the victims we know of. But what about those who aren't counted—the children being systematically groomed to serve the enemy, to believe the enemy, and to pray for the enemy? Save Ukraine has documented this story and dozens like it. Each one is an individual crime. Together, they are part of a grander plan: to turn Ukrainian children into Russians. This must be stopped. We must take a clear stand: involving a church in the militarization of children is a war crime. The ROC, by organizing camps where children weave nets for the military and pray for the aggressor's soldiers, is a direct accomplice to this crime. We will continue to speak out until every child is rescued.
