👨💻 My Take: Another super-close call – a 51:49 decision for what is, in my opinion, Sinatra’s finest album: “Francis Albert Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim.”
For me, this is the perfect marriage between Sinatra at the top of his game and one of the most beautiful, unlikely and elegant trends of the 60s: #BossaNova.
I immediately fell in love with Brazil’s unique, jazzy, floating sound – and the way Sinatra takes it to another level with that unmistakable voice. Where Astrud Gilberto or even Antônio Carlos Jobim often sound soft, airy and almost whispered, Sinatra brings a different kind of depth. He sings the notes like the true crooner he is – warmer, darker, sometimes almost dramatic, but never too much.
And then there is the secret hero of the album: German arranger and conductor Claus Ogerman. He arranged and conducted the ten tracks — and that is where the magic really happens. He doesn’t turn this into a Sinatra big-band album with some Brazilian decoration. Instead, he creates something chamber-like, almost weightless: strings, flutes, gentle rhythms, space, silence, air. Sinatra does not sing against the arrangement. He sings into it.
By the mid-60s, Bossa Nova had already arrived in America. Getz/Gilberto had opened the Brazilian sound to a huge U.S. audience in 1964; “The Girl From Ipanema” had become the signature song of that whole wave. But in 1967, Sinatra was also facing a changed world. He was still Sinatra – of course he was! – but Pop culture had moved on: Beatles, rock, youth culture, a new era.
In that moment, making an album with Antônio Carlos Jobim was not an attempt to chase rock or sound young. It was something much smarter: an elegant escape into another form of coolness.
To me, this is the perfect mature Sinatra masterpiece.
Other favorite tracks: “Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars,” “Dindi” and, of course, “The Girl From Ipanema.”
