Never forget
Never give up
China spent 37 years making sure its own people never see this footage.
Days after the June 4 massacre, a British ITN crew secretly filmed Beijing under occupation. Military convoys on the streets. Barricades. Soldiers in the middle of daily life. China was confiscating film from foreign journalists at the time, and much of what ITN shot never aired. The restored tapes are now online and spreading again.
Inside China, the images stay scrubbed from the internet. Many young people there have never seen the Tank Man photo.
A generation is growing up in China without ever seeing it.
We remember reading #ChowHangTung's letter from prison during this year's #JuneFourth commemoration:
🕯️To preserve the memory of #JuneFourth is to safeguard that very same baseline of human decency.
💪For in amnesia lies the demise of democracy.
📣We call on the international community to stand with #ChowHangTung and #LeeCheukYan

🔔Latest: #HongKong verdict today - the organizers of the Tiananmen Square vigil, #HKAlliance pro-democracy activists #ChowHangTung and #LeeCheukYan, were found guilty of “incitement to subversion”.
📣We strongly condemn the verdict, and urge for the sentence to not exceed the time already spent in pre-trial detention. We urge also the #UN and other States to condemn, and recall the High Commissioner's call for the #NSL to be repealed.

37 years ago today the Chinese government massacred peaceful protesters in Tiananmen Square. It was a horrific act by the CCP but God used it to bring out some great Chinese pastors like @BobFu4China and Pastor Ezra Jin. The CCP will not win its war on faith. #JuneFourth

🚨 Police stopped and searched two performance artists in Causeway Bay: one carrying a golden question mark balloon, another a 6.4-metre red string.
Before the NSL, #HongKong was the one place under 🇨🇳’s administration where you could publicly commemorate #JuneFourth. Now, the police crush the slightest hint of dissent.

As our Chair @benedictrogers says, we must ensure that the truth prevails, and that the courage and sacrifice of those who lost their lives in pursuit of democracy are never forgotten.

It will soon be 37 years since that day which can no longer be mentioned in China. They want us to forget. But I won’t forget. The world will not forget. Tyranny will end. Democracy will triumph. Killers will be condemned.

"We will etch the truth of #JuneFourth into the record of this trial, just as we once etched it into the soil of Victoria Park." 🕊️
From prison, #ChowHangTung has written a Mother’s Day letter to the #TiananmenMothers.
The gist of her letter:
· Memory as Self-Preservation: She insists that remembering June 4th isn't just an act of charity for the victims—it is how we protect our own space to breathe.
· The Courtroom as Record: Rather than pleading for mercy, she sees her trial as a public process to document the truths the authorities want to bury.
· A Simple Vow: A refusal to give up, stating that to break her word would be to "bring shame upon every Hongkonger."
"The ones who should be saying thank you are us."

June 4, 1989, was the date in Chinese history when the government killed Chinese citizens for protesting in Tian’anmen Square. This is one of those dates that we should never forget, no matter how much it’s actively suppressed.
