It claimed that the Germans operated a factory where the bodies of their soldiers were rendered down for fat, which was then used to make various products. It gained significant attention in 1917 but has been circulating since 1915. Cynthia Asquith noted in her diary on 16 June 1915: “We discussed the rumor that the Germans utilize even their corpses by converting them into glycerine with the by-product of soap.”] Such stories also appeared in the American press in 1915 and 1916. The French news also took it up in Le Gaulois, in February 1916. However, the stories were completely false and the tale became one of the war's most notorious atrocity propaganda stories of the war.
