Kosala was one of the sixteen Mahajanapadas (great kingdoms) during the time of the Buddha. King Pasenadi was its ruler. This is the story behind the name of the country Kosala.
#Mahapanada Kumar became serious and calm. The king then announced a great reward for anyone who could make him laugh. Many people came to the royal court and tried to make Mahapanada Kumar laugh, but no one succeeded. Finally, celestial performers from the heavenly realm arrived — Devendra Sakka — and they managed to make Mahapanada Kumar laugh.
When people returned from the court, they began asking each other, “Kacchi bho kushala? — Are you well?” From this incident, the country came to be known by that name.
A long period of the Buddha’s life was spent in this country. Many humble and important rules were established there.
After the Buddha’s Parinirvana, a bundle of his white hair relics (annaloma) was enshrined in a stupa in Kosala.

The Blessed one said: There are these five things, great king, that cannot be gotten by a contemplative, a brahman, a deva, a Mara, a Brahma, or anyone at all in the world. Which five?
1. May what is subject to aging not age.’
This is something that cannot be gotten.
2. May what is subject to illness not grow ill…
3. May what is subject to death not die…
4. May what is subject to ending not end…
5. ‘May what is subject to destruction not be destroyed. This is something that cannot be gotten by a contemplative, a brahman, a deva, a Mara, a Brahma, or anyone at all in the world.

Now, it happens to an instructed disciple of the noble ones that something that is subject to aging ages. With the aging of what is subject to aging, he reflects: ‘It doesn’t happen only to me that what is subject to aging will age. To the extent that there are beings—past & future, passing away & re-arising—it happens to all of them that what is subject to aging will age. And if, with the aging of what is subject to aging, 💥I were to sorrow, grieve, lament, beat my breast, & become distraught, food would not agree with me, my body would become unattractive, my affairs would go untended, my enemies would be gratified and my friends unhappy.’ So, with the aging of what is subject to aging, he does not sorrow, grieve, or lament, does not beat his breast or become distraught. This is called an instructed disciple of the noble ones who has pulled out the poisoned arrow of sorrow pierced with which the uninstructed run-of-the-mill person torments himself. Sorrowless, arrowless, the disciple of the noble ones is totally unbound right within himself. ― 💥 ― “And further, it happens to an instructed disciple of the noble ones that something that is subject to illness grows ill… that something subject to death dies… that something subject to ending ends… that something subject to destruction is destroyed. With the destruction of what is subject to destruction, he reflects: ‘It doesn’t happen only to me. that what is subject to destruction will be destroyed.
…etc. etc. (as above) … ― These are the five things, great king, that cannot be 💥 gotten by a contemplative, a brahman, a deva, a Mara, a Brahma, or anyone at all in the world.
―☀ Not by sorrowing, not by lamenting,
is any aim accomplished here, not even a bit.
Knowing you’re sorrowing & in pain,
your enemies are gratified.
But when a sage
with a sense for determining what is his aim
doesn’t waver in the face of misfortune,
his enemies are pained,
seeing his face unchanged, as of old.
Where & however an aim is accomplished
Through eulogies, chants, good sayings,
donations, & family customs,
follow them diligently there & that way.
But if you discern that your own aim
or that of others is not gained in this way,
acquiesce (to the nature of things)
unsorrowing, with the thought:
‘What important work am I doing now?’☀―

#Lucknow, capital city of #UttarPradesh is named after #Lakshmana from the epic #Ramayana. In 6th Century BCE, it was a part of the #Kosala #Mahajanapada. Popularly, known as the 'City of Nawabs', Lucknow flourished as a cultural and artistic hub under the reign of the Nawabs of Awadh, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The State #Museum in Lucknow was established in 1863 from the collection of Colonel Saunders Alexius Abbott. Initially designated as a ‘Provincial Museum,’ it was renamed the ‘State Museum’ in 1950. The museum has a #collection of approximately 83,000 specimens, which are categorized into five major sections: #Archaeology, #numismatics, #art, natural #History, and ethnography. In addition to these primary categories, the collection features a diverse array of artifacts, including ornaments, #arms and #armor, manuscripts, musical instruments, and various other miscellaneous items.
On January 11, 1989, #India Post commemorated the 125th anniversary of the Lucknow State Museum by issuing a stamp that highlights a 5th century CE terracotta plaque, which depicts Goddess #Durga on a lion, originating from Uttar Pradesh. This stamp, which carries a face value of 60 paise, underscores the historical significance of the museum's collection.
According to 'Catalogue of Terracottas Kept at State Museum, Lucknow,' authored by Vijay Kumar, the above plaque is attributed to the #Gupta Period. These plaques, handcrafted for #Temple decoration, exemplify the artistic #Traditions of that era. During the Gupta period, many brick temples were embellished with terracotta art, primarily in the form of plaques that illustrated religious narratives from significant epics alongside various deities.
The origins of terracotta art can be traced back to the Neolithic phase of Mehrgarh in the #Indian subcontinent. This enduring tradition has persisted through various regional cultures and #urban civilizations throughout India. Numerous #Clay artifacts have been unearthed, including figurines of both humans and animals (such as #Bulls , #Buffaloes , monkeys, and #dogs), #Seals , cart frames, wheels, fragments of bangles, toys, #Dice, pottery, ornaments, and more.
The establishment of the Gupta Empire in the 4th century CE marked a pivotal era during which art, #Science, and literature thrived. This period is characterized by the production of exceptionally high-quality terracotta sculptures that exhibited a cohesive style across the empire. Moreover, the iconographic representations of Brahmanical, Jain, and Buddhist divinities were refined and standardized during this time. The Mathura #school of Art heavily influenced Gupta sculptures. Some of these original #artworks can still be observed within their architectural context like the brick temple in Bhitargaon, Uttar Pradesh.
