Karnataka Child Rights Panel Flags Alcoholic Drink Near Schools

The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (#KSCPCR) has taken suo-moto cognizance of reports circulating on social media about the sale of a beverage called #BuzzBallz near schools and colleges in #Bengaluru.
In a letter addressed to the Karnataka State Drugs Control Department, the Commission expressed concern that the drink, marketed in a juice-like format contains nearly 15% #alcohol along with high sugar levels. According to the Commission, such a combination poses serious risks to children’s physical and mental health, potentially leading to addiction without their awareness.
The Commission noted that social media posts have highlighted the growing popularity of the drink among youngsters, raising alarm over its easy availability in areas frequented by students. Chairperson Shashidhar S. Kosambe, stressed that beverages with such high alcohol content should not be sold freely, especially in proximity to educational institutions.
The KSCPCR has directed the Drugs Control Department to conduct laboratory testing of Buzz Ballz to verify its alcohol levels. If found harmful, immediate steps are to be taken to restrict children’s access to the drink. The Commission has sought a detailed report of the action taken within five days.
