Chopping Mall slashed its way into theaters 40 years ago today —March 21, 1986 (under its initial test-market title Killbots before the killer rebrand)! 🛍️🔪🤖 This ultimate '80s techno-horror gem from director Jim Wynorski (the B-movie maestro behind so many wild rides) delivers that perfect mix of teen party vibes, malfunctioning tech gone rogue, and gloriously over-the-top kills. A lightning bolt zaps the Park Plaza Mall's fancy new security system, turning three high-tech security bots—adorably nicknamed Protector 1, 2, and 3 (aka the infamous Killbots)—into laser-firing, taser-wielding murder machines that hunt down a group of horny mall employees trapped overnight after their after-hours bash. The awesome robots? Practical effects gold—tracked treads, glowing red eyes, extendable claws, tasers, tranquilizer darts, and that classic "Intruder detected... eliminate!" voice that still gives chills. They roll through the mall like tiny terminators, zapping, lasering, and chopping up victims in creative, gory ways: necks torn open, electrocutions in puddles, explosive elevator drops, and more explosive propane-fueled mayhem. Total body count hits around 12 (including the bots getting taken out in epic fashion), with plenty of practical gore and '80s cheese.
