REVIEW:
I just finished watching a #TerrenceMalick film that finally captured my attention: #KnightOfCups (2015), starring #ChristianBale, #CateBlanchett and #NataliePortman, among a larger cast.
I've begun to better understand the director's narrative perspective, which I already found tedious after #TheThinRedLine. His filmography is based on representing the feelings and thoughts of his protagonists through the elements they experience, and to emphasize this, Malick uses photography... and A LOT of it.
This film is no different, but it offers a better understanding of what's happening with Christian Bale and his personal quest.
Basically, it's about a successful man in the film industry and a notorious womanizer, but one who can't find in any of his partners what complements him and fills the void within him. The film is excellent at demonstrating that no matter how much money you have and how many women you want, pleasure is fleeting and doesn't fill the emptiness inside when the answers aren't found in your partners, but within yourself.
Bale's relationship with his brother, and especially his broken bond with his father, among other things, takes its toll on many aspects of his life, preventing him from expressing himself with many of his partners, and Malick makes good use of photography and emotions to explain this.
I liked it. Personally, I liked the relationship with Cate Blanchett the most; I think it was the healthiest of all, although the film implies that they each went their separate ways, and Bale continues his search for something that gives his life meaning, something that completes him... something he still hasn't quite found.
It's not a film for everyone; it's heavier than holding a nuclear missile with your toes, but it's very good at expressing that feeling of anguish or uncertainty about those things we all go through at some point in our lives.
It's worth watching, depending on your mood.
