One assumption is that #NoMowMay allows dandelions to flower to feed pollinators. The data coming out of this year's research trial is more nuanced, without a clear trend. Dandelions can establish and flower in high-traffic and low mowing height conditions. #Know2MowMay suggests managing turf surfaces by mowing as needed, despite the date on a calendar.

What did you do at work today? We counted dandelions in the #NoMowMay research plots. 🌼
These yellow flowers can be visited by pollinators, but since they are not native to Canada they aren’t an ideal food source for our native insects. #Know2MowMay

#NoMowMay aftermath. The bigger they are, the harder they fall! You can clearly see which patches had the tallest growth, with respective scalping damage evident 10 days after mowing. This is why it’s hard to make a blanket statement across all growing conditions! #Know2MowMay

Did you know? Healthy grass holds down soil, preventing erosion and reducing risk of flooding in urban settings. Keep it healthy, keep it mowed. #Know2MowMay

Plan to support pollinators year round instead of following a trendy hashtag. #know2mowmay #plantnatives #urbangardening
This trial is on a home lawn with 2mx2m plots and 4 replicates. Similar to the trial conducted at the GTI last spring, the floral resources are highly variable. Conclusion: sometimes #NoMowMay creates more flowers, but not always. #Know2MowMay
The average height in the #NoMowMay plots is 60 cm (24") and although the trend shows more flowers in uncut grass, we have not yet reached statistical significance due to the plot-to-plot variability. #Know2MowMay #Lawncare #Flowers

Chickweed is found throughout North America. In lawns, it rarely grows taller than 2 inches along the ground and forms a thick, dense mat that produces small, white flowers. It will self-pollinate but may also be visited by several bees and flies. #LawnBiodiversity #Know2MowMay

A “non lawn” weed has flowered in one of my #NoMowMay plots! This is annual fleabane and pollinators love it. This is the closest I’ve gotten to matching the wildflower garden graphics used to advertise this movement (see example). Is this worth the ticks though? 🤔#Know2MowMay

YES! "Instead of letting non-native plants (the weedy flowers that pop up in lawns) dominate the spring landscape, try planting a diversity of native trees, shrubs and other flowering plants would better support our biodiversity." #Know2MowMay #PlantNatives
Plan to support native biodiversity long-term with trees, shrubs, and flowering plants. Expecting a lawn to instantly become a wildflower garden is unrealistic, and dandelion pollen is the nutritional equivalent of a fast-food restaurant. #NoMowMay #Know2MowMay #LawnScience

I’m honoured to even be mentioned in the same sentence as David Attenborough on @cbcfreshair . My home gardens are filled with native flowers to support pollinators and my lawn is mowed for pest control and functionality. #pollinators #nomowmay #know2mowmay
Fresh Air with Ismaila Alfa - May 18, 2024: ‘No Mow May' is not for the bees. Our communications coordinator, Dr. Stricker talked about slow mow summers, low input lawns, and the misunderstandings about #NoMowMay

New concepts of lawncare include "slow mow summer" (mow less frequently) and "bee lawns" (planting mowing tolerant flowers). Read more here: https://t.co/ELKTidFYfQ

From a distance, this #NoMowMay plot looks like all grass. However, there’s creeping Charlie flowers under the canopy. I think this is what the paper was referring to when they talked about an optimal mid-point of mowing frequency. Tall turf covers flowers and blocks pollinators
I fixed my busted mower and we are in business! People ask how often you need to mow, and I always answer the same: “Periodically” 😉 (if you get the joke, you’re contractually obligated to like this post)

Me: “My grass is 32 inches tall.”
Them: “You mean centimetres. “
Me: “Did I stutter?” 😏
This Kentucky bluegrass floret from my #NoMowMay plot is 83 cm tall!!! #Know2MowMay

A lawn that's left uncut for a few weeks won't necessarily generate a spontaneous wildflower garden. If you want to learn more about creating a year-long "bee lawn", visit this great resource from the University of Minnesota! #Know2MowMay

Short-cut turf isn't just nice to look at. It's reducing noise, preventing pests, and decreasing risk of flooding in urban areas. Creating a pollinator corner or even a hanging basket filled with flowers is our recommendation if you want to provide pollen resources! #Know2MowMay

Longer turf = more biodiversity. We can't argue that! However, not all biodiversity is cute and cuddly. When we invite biodiversity into our urban neighbourhoods, we will also increase the populations of pest species like rats and coyotes. @Lawn_Science #Lawncare #Know2MowMay

Another reason why mowed grass is best. After doing flower counts and measuring my #NoMowMay plots, I found this bugger biting my leg!! 😱 I have never had ticks in my yard before (but also note that this year is going to be a banner year for ticks) #Know2MowMay #PestControl

#NoMowMay is a campaign that paints every ecosystem with the same brush. We can't make decisions based on a calendar. Choose your mowing height and frequency based on how YOU want to use the turf. Learn about #Know2MowMay at https://t.co/qUO7soDiwo and make informed choices.
