The extreme toughness of infectious prions in the environment, and the long incubation period for infected deer, make it very difficult to manage chronic wasting disease once it is established in a wild deer population. Preventing its spread is critical. #KnowCWD
Chronic wasting disease is caused by a deformed protein called a prion. It is passed from deer to deer, and possibly from plants or soil to deer. By contrast, EHD and bluetongue are viruses passed by biting insects, not deer to deer. #KnowCWD
The incubation period for chronic wasting disease can last months or years, but once deer begin suffering visible signs, they may be killed quickly by predators, cars or other factors. This is why most hunters will never see a sick-looking deer with CWD. #KnowCWD

Did you know? Chronic wasting disease costs state wildlife agencies about $250,000 for sampling and other efforts in the first year it is identified in a new state. Since 2002, Wisconsin DNR has spent over $50 million on CWD surveillance, testing and research. #KnowCWD
A new way to look at the CWD map, courtesy of @USGSWILDLIFE. Newer cases in 2018 or to date in 2019 are in yellow for wild deer (counties) and red for captive deer (deer pens). Reveals how CWD continues to creep outward or make jumps to new pens and counties. #KnowCWD

Chronic wasting disease contagions spread from deer to deer through urine, saliva, blood, feces, deer parts, and especially via live deer. Importantly, there is no vaccine or cure. #KnowCWD
