Today we’re looking at hazard warning signs. These triangular signs with red borders warn you about road conditions that require lower speeds. Recognising them keeps you safe and protects your vehicle.
🚧 Uneven Road – This sign shows bumps or dips ahead. It warns you of speed bumps, dips or rough road surfaces. Slow down to avoid damaging your suspension or losing control. It’s usually placed within 30 m of the first bump.
💧 Slippery Road – When you see a car skidding inside a triangle, the road may be slippery due to rain, oil or loose gravel. Reduce speed, avoid sudden braking and keep extra distance from the vehicle ahead.
👷 Road Works – A triangular sign showing a worker warns that temporary construction is in progress. Slow down, watch for equipment and give workers space. On dual carriageways the sign is repeated on the left median

We’re focusing on speed limits and stopping distances—key factors in preventing crashes and penalties. Speed limits are not suggestions; they’re the maximum legal speeds set by law.
The main parameters used in setting speed limits include:
🚗 Built‑up areas: In towns and villages, the maximum speed limit is 50 km/h for private cars, taxis and buses . The sign is a red‑bordered circle with “50.” Slow down, you’re sharing the road with pedestrians and cyclists.
🛣️ Highways: Outside built‑up areas, cars, taxis and buses must not exceed 80 km/h. Keep an eye on the speed limit signs; they reflect road conditions.
🚀 Expressways: Private cars have a 100 km/h limit . Even on a smooth expressway, stay within posted limits, speed cameras and road safety patrols monitor compliance.
🛑 Stopping distance matters! Leave enough space to stop safely in case the vehicle ahead slows suddenly. At 20 km/h, you need ~10 m; at 80 km/h, about 72 m.
One trick that can help is the two‑second rule: while in motion, pick a roadside marker; while braking, if you reach it before you finish saying “Staying too close or trailing for safety,” that means you’re too close.
The weather is also very important, in rainy or poor conditions, add more seconds.
