#Ethiopia: Preserving a 400-year-old farming legacy, #Konso elders pass down terrace-building knowledge
In the rugged highlands of southern Ethiopia, the Konso people have cultivated their land for centuries using a sophisticated stone terracing system, a #UNESCO World Heritage Site. The terraces, essential for preventing soil erosion and conserving water, have enabled this Indigenous community to thrive in a semiarid environment.
For 97-year-old elder Gehano Guchiro Nekayto, the terraces are "not just farming tools," but a gift from ancestors that represent a profound connection to the land and culture. Gehano explains, “The terraces prevent the rains from washing away our crops; without them, farming here would be impossible.” He emphasizes that regular maintenance, such as replacing displaced stones and reinforcing foundations, is vital to their longevity.
However, population growth and climate change are putting pressure on this ancient practice. Gehano notes that younger generations are increasingly drawn to urban opportunities, which risks severing the transmission of knowledge. “The skills needed to build and maintain terraces are learned by doing,” he says. “Without this experience, the terraces won’t survive.”
Despite these challenges, community leaders remain committed to preserving the system. Gehano believes the terraces are not just a local treasure but a model of sustainable agriculture for the world. “Our terraces are a symbol of resilience,” he says. “It’s our duty to protect them for future generations.”

#KEFI Gold and Copper secures critical metals exploration license in #Konso, #Ethiopia
KEFI Gold and Copper plc announced that it has been granted “100% of the Konso Critical Metals Area exploration license in Ethiopia” by the Ethiopian Ministry of Mines. The license, awarded to KEFI’s wholly-owned subsidiary, KEFI Minerals Ethiopia Limited (KME), spans 22 square kilometers near Arba Minch and focuses on critical metals like copper and tantalum. Harry Anagnostaras-Adams, KEFI’s Executive Chairman, stated, “This is the first of several opportunities we plan to pursue in Ethiopia through KME.”
The company plans to leverage its previous experience and Vale’s earlier findings in the region to advance exploration. According to KEFI, the project targets metals critical to electrification and technology transitions, with an initial focus on copper and tantalum. “We intend to cherry-pick critical metals opportunities and establish regional alliances where warranted,” added Harry, emphasizing KEFI’s commitment to expanding its portfolio in Ethiopia.

#Ethiopia: Deadly assault in #Segen district of #Konso zone claims at least 13 lives, inflicts heavy damage on gov’t properties and public infrastructure
A deadly assault in the Segen district of Konso Zone, South Ethiopia, claimed the lives of eight police officers and five civilians on August 18, 2024. The death toll later rose to 14, according to Urmale Ugande, the district administrator, who described the attackers as "members of an extremist group."
The attackers, from the #Derashe and #Burji zones, set fire to homes and government buildings, forcing local forces to withdraw. "When the militia and police forces were compelled to withdraw from the area, overwhelmed by the group’s superior strength, the extremists set fire to several homes," Urmale stated. The Ethiopian National Defense Force and Federal Police have since intervened, but the damage is extensive, with losses exceeding 600 million birr.
