#LB986 opponents calmly explain what's wrong with it and why they won't compromise. A bad bill is a bad bill. "Compromise" won't help it. Yet, #LB986 proponents shrilly lash out as though they weren't present when all this was explained. Where were they? Out collecting orders?

Tomorrow, #neleg #LB986 is expected to fail in a cloture vote. But, it's not over. This won't be the last of bills seeking to restrict tax authority of public school districts. As a state, we can't solve #PropertyTaxes until we solve state funding for #PublicSchools. 🧵1/9

@janekleeb @Blood4G @senatorblood @senatorblood is one of a few current senators who understand school funding and appreciate local school boards. She and some savvy others have carried on the fight valiantly against #LB986. May it go down to defeat. And may #LB1107 (2020) either be fixed or dismantled.

This was a productive and easy to follow exchange on #neleg #LB986 yesterday between @senatorblood & Senator Briese. #PropertyTaxes are high b/c the state doesn't fully fund #PublicEducation. The bill's introducer concedes as much during the discussion. Check it out! 👀

Unfunded & underfunded mandates that the state imposes on political subdivisions is the systemic issue that continues to keep our property taxes high. If we keep putting bandaids on the issue, like LB986 does, and never address the root cause, property taxes will remain inflated.

#LB986 @MattHansenNE reviews that the only 2 examples of supposedly "out of control spending by schools" is a single one-time purchase by a forward-thinking school, and a vague hand wave at spending by Lincoln generally. That's it? (Don't confuse us with facts, Sen. Hansen)

@RachelMGibsonNE It was David City. It fell to kind and wise Sen. Kolterman to tell the rest of the story that the LOCAL people saw how useful that could be and said what a great idea? Then it shows up on the floor of the Legislature like it's something to be upset about. #LB986

From 9a-12p today #neleg heard floor debate on #LB986, a bill attempting to stifle local control of public school districts' tax authority by placing arbitrary caps and increasing the override ability from simple majority to 75% board vote & 60% vote of the public. 🧵1/4

#LB986 @senatormachaela is so amazing. "We put more into property tax credit fund than schools collect in property taxes - why don't we just fully fund schools" and move on w/ our lives. "I've been here 4 years, I'm not on the committees, and this took me 15 minutes to solve"

#LB986 Linehan: "We love local control" (until we don't) Linehan crows how she is several years on the Education and Revenue Committees (as though that proves how much she cares about public schools). Groene was on Education for 6 years and no one doubted what HE thought.
