Happy Trails #LBNMN
Matt Nieto has announced his retirement from the @NHL after 12 seasons.
From Long Beach, California, Matt played college hockey for Boston University beginning in 2010, and at the conclusion of his freshman season, was drafted by the @SanJoseSharks in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
Matt returned to Boston for two additional seasons before moving to professional hockey at the end of the 2012-13 season with San Joseβs affiliate in nearby Worcester, Massachusetts. On October 3, 2013, Matt made his NHL debut, and in just his third career game on October 8, 2013, he recorded his first NHL goal. In addition to scoring his first career goal, Matt also registered two assists in a Sharks victory.
After 221 regular-season games with San Jose from 2013 to 2016, Matt joined the Colorado @Avalanche in January 2017. Matt registered a career high in goals (15) in his first full season with Colorado during the 2017-18 season. Matt returned to San Jose ahead of the 2020-21 season, appearing in 143 games during his second stint with San Jose, before rejoining the Colorado Avalanche in January 2023.
Matt signed with the Pittsburgh @penguins in the 2023 offseason and played two seasons with Pittsburgh from 2023 to 2025. Matt concludes his NHL career with 705 regular-season games played, in addition to 62 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Congratulations on your retirement, Matt, and welcome to the NHL Alumni Association!
