Voting for the election of the eighth-term Legislative Council (#LegCo) of the #HongKong Special Administrative Region (#HKSAR) kicked off on Sunday morning. This marks the second Legislative Council election held after the improvement of Hong Kong SAR's electoral system.
The eighth Legislative Council consists of 90 seats, divided into 40 seats for the Election Committee constituency, 30 seats for functional constituencies, and 20 seats for geographical constituencies. A total of 161 candidates are competing for the 90 seats.
In addition to over 600 ordinary polling stations, this election has established three categories of dedicated polling stations for civil servants, Hospital Authority medical staff, and ethnic minorities. Near-border polling stations have also been set up at Sheung Shui, the Hong Kong Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-#Macao Bridge, and Hong Kong International Airport to facilitate voters traveling between mainland #China and overseas, as well as voters on duty at these locations on polling day.
Ordinary polling stations are open from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., providing 16 hours of voting time. The newly-elected Legislative Council members will assume office on January 1, 2026.
