Understanding pain is crucial, but being able to communicate that understanding is even more important, and even more difficult. Active listening can shift the focus from pain/fear, and toward the positive and meaningful.

The experience of shame is extremely disabling, and an important part of suffering. Societal messages (including those from our clinicians) that belittle or invalidate can increase that sense of suffering.
