This coming week is your last chance to see our #LMHoards exhibition, including these Anglo-Saxon coins (sceattas) from Fincham.
The coins were buried around the middle of the eighth century AD, and were found by a metal detectorist scattered over a small area.

This set of Iron Age coins from our #LMHoards exhibition is the only collection which is not actually classed as a hoard.
Deposited as offerings in Snettisham over a long period of time, they are classed as a votive assemblage.
On display until 11 November.

A hoard of 153 silver coins, plus ceramic and fabric fragments, were found by John Bocking when he was metal detecting at Fring in 1990.
There is still time to see the Fring Hoard in our #LMHoards exhibition before it closes on 11th November.

⚔️It was #OnThisDay in 1643 that the siege of King’s Lynn began during the English Civil War.
Around that time the Dersingham Hoard was buried, possibly for safekeeping. But the silver cup and 129 silver coins were never recovered. You can see them in our #LMHoards exhibition.

Our #LMHoards exhibition is here until Saturday 11th November 2023!

By the 270s the only coins used in everyday transactions were radiates, bronze coins with a tiny element of silver. Given the very low value of the metal, many were needed even for minor purchases.
You can view two radiate coin hoards in our #LMHoards exhibition.

In 1990, John Bocking found an Iron Age coin hoard at Fring, leading to the recovery of 153 coins. A wheel-made cup or bowl that contained the coins was reconstructed from pottery sherds. Its mouth was covered with cloth.
See them in our #LMHoards exhibition! ✨

Until the late 17th century coins and dies used to stamp them were made by hand. Each die is very slightly different. By close study we can tell coins that were struck using the same dies.
Our #LMHoards exhibition features beautiful Iron Age stater coins. 🤩

Scattered across history, coins in our #LMHoards exhibition were made in the same way.
A metal blank was placed between two dies carved with designs, one set into the base of a tree trunk. A single blow of a hammer imprinted the designs onto the coin.

🪓The Bronze Age founders’ hoard in our #LMHoards exhibition contains broken or unfinished metal objects, likely intended to be recycled into new tools.
Late Bronze Age people were probably nomadic. The hoard may have been buried where they overwintered.

Our #LMHoards exhibition features Bronze Age palstave axes from Holme-next-the-Sea. 🪓
They were found close to the spot of Bronze Age timber circles, Seahenge and Holme II. These axes were not used to create the monuments which were already about 500 years old.

The Dersingham Hoard from our #LMHoards exhibition was found by Terry Graver when filing in pipe trenches for new houses. What he thought were half-crowns turned out to be 128 silver pennies.
The next day David Mallon found another coin making the total of 129 coins.

The Dersingham Hoard is a silver cup containing 129 silver shillings dating from the reigns of Philip and Mary (1554-57) until Charles I (1625-49).
It was most likely buried during the siege of Lynn in 1643 on Sir Valentine Pell’s land, though not by him.

Medieval silver pennies and half-pennies in our #LMHoards exhibition were found during construction of Boots Pharmacy in King’s Lynn.
Some coins were minted across England, others came from Scotland, Dublin, Brabant and Cambrai, showing trade links of the Lynn port.

These silver coins from our #LMHoards exhibition are known as sceattas. Though some were struck in England in 675-750AD, these coins were made in Frisia, near the mouth of River Rhine.
Likely a payment for exports, they show maritime trade across the North Sea. ⛵
