Moral: We ALL make mistakes…learn from them!
A story about telling it like it is & keeping it real!
Every December Bill would put on a very special IBD @IBDinvestors weekend workshop in Santa Monica (Master’s aka Level IV) it was a wonderful event with Die Hard (yes, it’s a Christmas movie) attendees.
Something I’d always look forward to each year.
For many years Bill & a couple others would do a presentation on the big stage and then 5 or 6 of us would do small “breakout” sessions in the smaller rooms.
Eventually, we got rid of the breakout sessions, and everything was done in the big room (much better format).
My topic was typically going over my routines (premarket, during trade, post trading & weekend).
I’d show how to go through hundreds of stocks quickly using a simple strategy I designed. In a nutshell, it was a triage system that I designed over the years.
Something I've done every day for 25 years
Because no one would believe I could effectively & efficiently go through hundreds of stocks quickly…each year the night before I’d time myself going through the @MarketSmith Growth 250 (one of my favorite inventions that I still use daily).
I’d time myself using my laptop & the hotel’s Wi-Fi going through the G250 using this method. It would typically take between 10 to 13 minutes to view 250 to 300 stocks. I wasn’t trying to go fast…if anything that was slow.
You’d quickly go through a list of stocks in MarketSmith using the spacebar to advance. Then ask yourself is this something worth following or not.
If not…then move to the next stock.
If it was interesting but out of position (either extended or too deep in a base) I’d put it in my “Universe” List. AND keep moving on. That list could be 100 to 300 stocks that I’d want to monitor daily.
BUT if it was in position, meaning if you could picture the next bar giving you a buy signal, I put it in my “READY” list.
Yes, Universe & Ready were my names I came up with, I’ve been using them since the late ‘90s (man I’m old).
I’m glad to see others continue with those names. But I’ve decided to change the names…any ideas on what I’m calling them Right Now?😉
The READY list (aka 5150 list…oh man I can’t keep secrets long) is the ONLY list you’d continue researching.
But only when finished playing through the screens. THIS IS KEY and a huge time saver.
Remember regardless of how many stocks you play through (100 or 1,300) the key was to not stop on the non-universe stocks.
Also, not to spend any time researching the Universe (aka _____)…remember those were out of position…so why waste your time?
But you’d spend a lot of time researching each of the READY stocks.
Next, give each a letter rating VIP! I’ll post a webinar about how to do that below.
Rating each stock and putting a “buy” (pivot) price is key. I can't stress that enough!
That will help you prioritize if everything is breaking out at the same time.
Or if you bought an “A” and a “B” stock and are down on both…why risk buying a “C” stock? That would be silly.
But if both the “A” and “B” are doing well…then you can decide if you want to reach down to the “C”.
Anyway I’m way off topic again…I wanted to discuss making MISTAKES!!!
Well during these workshops, those of us teaching the “breakout” sessions would have to present the same topic 5 or 6 times over the weekend.
While it was fun because there were only 10 to 15 folks at a time, and you’d get to do a lot of Q&A (my favorite).
But having to give the SAME presentation 2 to 3 times a day was a serious drag. BIG TIME.
So after the 6th presentation for the weekend on a Sunday, I made a HUGE MISTAKE!
During my Q&A portion where I’d just analyze a stock that someone brought up someone wanted to go over an Oil & Gas name.
OIL & GAS!!! WTF
We didn’t trade those! In fact, Bill hated them, we all hated them…they’d set up like they were going to break out and then quickly fail.
Plus, well they were energy stocks…those were boring (this wasn’t 2022 LOL)
The first mistake was allowing my mind to wander during the presentation (I think I was hungry & thinking about hitting In-N-Out on my drive home LOL).
As my mind was wandering this VERY nice older lady started asking about this oil stock. She kept going on and on about energy prices, the dollar & a bunch of other more complicated things…but all I could think about was if I was going to go with animal-style fries or normal🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
As she was talking, I was just mindlessly nodding my head yes.
Oh man HUGE MISTAKE
Because then she followed with “So Mike if the dollar goes down, OPEC does ____, and if oil does _____ what will the stock do?
LMAO I had ZERO CLUE!!
Bill never talked about currencies, OPEC, oil, etc… but the whole time I’d been nodding my head like I knew what she was talking about…
So let's just say I crashed and burned on that one…BIG TIME!!!
It’s been almost 20 years & I still feel like a serious American Idiot!
The funny thing is no one in the group picked up on how DEAD WRONG I was with what I was saying…I just said stuff like you hear on CNBC all the time…folks just using “big words” and sounding “good”.
How did they not know?
That was the first & LAST time I ever BS’d an answer…man that Catholic guilt has just eaten me alive ever since.
If she’s reading this, I’m sincerely sorry, I was wrong, that wasn't cool. You paid Bill a lot of money, you deserved better.
I should have said something like...
“I have no idea. I don’t trade oil stocks, Bill doesn’t like oil, we don’t trade or look at currencies, etc…but I can tell you based on the chart it looks like it should ______”
THE MORAL
Always tell the truth! 100% not 99.999%
KNOW WHAT YOU KNOW…but more importantly…
KNOW WHAT YOU DO NOT KNOW!!
And when in doubt, remember what Jimi & his Band of Gypsys said…
“They don’t know…do you know, I DON’T KNOW
A Webby #TLDR aka #LSRO (Limited Series Ramble ON)
Moral: Stop complaining & just find a _____SOLUTION!
Bill’s greatest rating IMHO was his original Relative Strength Rating (RS)
A simple 1(worst) to 99 (best) rating of the last 12 months of the stock vs the rest of the database (not the S&P 500, that’s the RS line)
His genius was putting more weight on the most recent quarter. The other three quarters were equally weighted but the most recent was 2x
BUT it has a flaw, and it’s a big one IMO
If a stock has had a HUGE move over the past 12 months, it will still have a 99 RS even when it's fallen apart!!
Let's say a stock moves up 300% but then falls 50% off its highs, it probably still has a 99…not helpful for screening or anything really.
After the bubble burst in 2000 it really bothered me (not good when something bothers me, I have a hard time letting it go LOL) that terrible-looking stocks like QCOM still had a 99 RS even after it had fallen 50% off its highs!
So in classic Shark Tank lingo, I said “There must be a better way”
After deep thought & a TON of trial and error (which I’ll spare you the details on), this is what I came up with…
Measure the performance over just 3 months, not 12!
I also created a 6-month RS but prefer the 3-month. I also did a 3-month version of the Group RS (normally 6 months) too, but that’s on the institutional side & a story for another day.
Because everyone was used to the 1 to 99 percentile rating system, I stayed with that (1 = the worst 1% of the database and 99 = the best)
Okay, that was simple enough, but not Good Enough😉🤘
Since I came up with the 21 EMA thing (I don’t know anyone who was using it before I started teaching it…but I’m sure there were some folks…I just never heard of it from others) I was deep into the EMA vs SMA thing.
For those not up on the age-old Coke vs Pepsi debate of SMA vs EMA. In a nutshell, SMA is just a normal average, each day is the same. EMA (exponential moving average) puts more weight on the most recent day, a little less on the next day, even less on the day before, etc…
To me, EMA matched more with how we look at the market. Today’s action is more meaningful than yesterday’s. While we are on the subject, Yesterdays (GnR) > Yesterday (The Beatles) it’s just a fact, deal with it, you know it's true LOL
So I wanted to bring the EMA thing over to the new ratings to put more weight on the recent performance, similar to what Bill did with the most recent quarter on the original RS. So I designed it to put the most weight on the most recent days performance, less on the previous and so on.
At the time I was also bothered by the fact that a lot of cheap illiquid stocks would mess up the ratings. When you’d have stocks move from $0.25 to $0.50 or similar those would eat up a lot of the slots of the rating.
My thought was to only rate stocks in our tradable universe. (aka the right way)
So originally it was designed to only rate a subset of the database, essentially eliminating ultra-thin or ultra-low-priced stocks. That is the RIGHT way to do it. But to make it easier and not confuse folks, at some point it was changed to rate all stocks, Oh Well, you can’t win all the battles.
I then created an option in WONDA (the old institutional version of MarketSmith now Panaray) to plot the ratings up on the top (see below)
IMO it's not as important what the current rating is as much as its recent trend. MarketSmith should add this to the top of their charts. I also included the option to plot Composite and other ratings (extremely helpful).
But for this example, I’m just showing the original classic 12-month Relative Strength rating (in Neon Greene) and my 3 Month RS in Orange.
You can see that a few months after its IPO the 12-month RS was essentially pinned to 99.
A few days it fell to 97 or 98 but look at the Greene (as in Jackie Greene, check him out) line at the top it doesn’t even budge after it fell from $400 to $145!
But the 3 Month RS went up & down the way you’d assume it would!
PROBLEM SOLVED!
Webby’s point is NOT that the 3 month is better than 12 months, it's not it’s just different! It’s like Derek & the Domino’s vs Cream…just different
My point is that when you see a PROBLEM don’t complain about it…do some research, and stare at the fish tank until you find a SOLUTION!
NOT ADVICE (well other than the music references, check those out)
Help others! #Karma
