🧬📰 Inside #LabVoice Issue 02: A new era of genomic surveillance in Guinea
In Conakry, Guinea, the Molecular Biology Laboratory at the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) Guinée is redefining public health preparedness, shifting from reliance on external testing to fast, locally generated genomic intelligence.
With support from the @MastercardFdn’s Saving Lives and Livelihoods (SLL) Project and technical collaboration between ASLM and @AfricaCDC, the laboratory has been transformed into a fully operational genomic sequencing hub. Today, it routinely sequences priority pathogens including influenza, Mpox, and SARS-CoV-2, enabling faster detection, informed decision-making, and stronger outbreak response.
Key highlights include:
✔ Installation of a MiSeq i100+ sequencing platform, stabilising workflows and enabling uninterrupted sequencing
✔ Coordinated wet-lab and bioinformatics training across multiple countries, building end-to-end sequencing expertise
✔ Strengthened national, regional, and global data sharing, reducing turnaround times from weeks to days
✔ Enhanced early warning capacity through Guinea’s sentinel influenza surveillance system
Beyond national impact, INSP’s growing capacity strengthens regional health security, advances a One Health approach to genomic surveillance, and invests in the next generation of African scientists.
