Coming Soon | ‘Days of lazy banking are over’
Why Uday Kotak thinks banks must stop thinking like banks?

#LeadershipLanguage | In the early 1980s, in a bustling Mumbai household where nearly sixty members of a Gujarati family shared one roof, a young man dared to dream differently. He could’ve taken the comfortable route, joining his family's cotton trading business, but Uday Kotak decided to take the road less taken.
At just 26, with a loan of ₹30 lakh from family and friends, he launched a tiny bill-discounting venture. No pedigree in banking. No big backers. Kotak relied on a simple conviction: India needed financial institutions built on trust.
Four decades later, that small venture would evolve into Kotak Mahindra Bank - India’s fourth-largest private lender and, since 2003, the first NBFC in India to convert into a full-fledged bank.
As Kotak Mahindra Bank marks 40 years, Uday Kotak has a clear message for the industry: banks can no longer afford complacency. “Banks should not think about themselves as banks,” he warns. “They must think of themselves as being in the business of serving customers. The mindset that ‘we are a bank, we have a right to be lazy,’ is dangerous. The pool of savings in banking is under threat.”
Kotak championed the idea of the “professional entrepreneur,” blending entrepreneurial instinct with professional rigour. He emphasises prudence, simplicity and humility as core values for any banker, alongside the importance of “risk-adjusted returns.”
His “four-quadrant theory” — Rama (right in letter and spirit), Krishna (right in spirit, pragmatic on letter), Duryodhana (wrong in spirit) and Ravana (wrong in both) — guides his ethical framework. “We must operate in the Rama quadrant, but if at all we need to move, Krishna is fine.”

Every morning—yes, even Sundays— my father, @DrPrathapCReddy, walks into the very hospital he dreamt into existence over four decades ago.
When he built India’s first corporate hospital, many thought it was too big a dream. But he believed. He believed that India could provide world-class healthcare, that we could heal our own and the world.
That belief gave birth to @HospitalsApollo , which has now grown into one of Asia’s largest healthcare institutions.
From adopting the latest technology to embracing AI, he continues to bet big on the future of healthcare. His vision? To make India the global hub of healing for the world.
And through it all, he’s taught me something priceless: to follow the path of the heart, no matter how uncertain it seems.
Thank you, Dad— Always inspired by you. 💙

On #LeadershipLanguage, Dr. Prathap C. Reddy (@DrPrathapCReddy), founder and chairman of @HospitalsApollo, shares what fuels him even at 92. “The greatest strength is the happiness that comes from doing something for others,” he says, as he continues making two-hour hospital rounds every day and caring for 60,000 people in his native village.
And through it all, he carries humour and humility. He jokes, “My wife became a good cook because of me, since I couldn’t even make a cup of tea.”
Dr. Reddy also opens up about writing to Prime Minister Modi with a vision to make India a global healthcare destination. For him, treating patients like family is at the heart of care.
Lifting the curtain on Apollo’s succession plan, he reveals that 25% of the company must never be sold, preserving the “family touch” that makes Apollo more than just a money-making business.

On #LeadershipLanguage with @ShereenBhan, “worshipper of #entrepreneurship” Renuka Ramnath offers a peek into her approach to #investing.
She believes in “backing the right #entrepreneur who has the ability to see the possibility in a given opportunity.” But it’s not just about vision, it’s also about character. “An entrepreneur should be a people’s person and have the right attitude towards governance,” she says.
And once the bet is made, she insists on “walking hand-in-hand with the founder to identify the blind spots and fix them, rather than driving the car.”
