UD 'sun' or 'day' in Sumerian.
This sign has a beautiful origin as a pictogram of the rising sun (the topmost). Later it becomes so abstract that I always struggle to recognize it...

ṭuppu: 'clay tablet' in Akkadian.
Well, not a lot explanation needed today. Clay tablets were the heart of the written culture in Mesopotamia. Any ideas how many of them archaeologists have found? That's my favourite fact of cuneiform.

tappû: 'comrade, fellow' in Akkadian (Babylonian).
This word is used by Gilgamesh and Enkidu of each other, so I chose an impression of an Assyrian seal featuring those two fighting the Bull of Heaven.

šarru 𒈗 : 'king' in Akkadian.
It's a logogram consisting two Sumerian signs: LÚ 'man' and GAL 'great', so king is a great man. In the left you see how it changes over time.
In the right, king Hammurabi and the sun god Šamaš.

Mesopotamians often called everything outside the city "steppe". We in Finland sometimes use 'forest' similarly - not everything is steppe in Mesopotamia or forest here, but close enough :D

sisû 𒀲 𒆳 𒊏: 'horse' in Akkadian.
One of my favourite animal names in Akkadian, since it is written with nice Sumerian logograms meaning "foreign donkey". Donkeys were more common than horses in Mesopotamia.

qaqqadu: 'head' in Akkadian
Here you see the evolution of this cuneiform sign from earliest drawn pictograms to more and more abstract forms.
Nice to know: Mesopotamians often used 'ṣalmat qaqqadi(m)', 'black-heads', to refer all people.

Purattu: river Euphrates in Akkadian, one of the great rivers which eventually give the area name Mesopotamia, 'between rivers'.
Word 'Euphrates' comes from the very same word, through Persian and Greek.

Ninda: 'bread, food' in Sumerian. Here you see how much the sign has changed in two thousand years.
Featuring also some of the cuneiform cookies (gingerbread) we did last year. Actual cuneiform bread is something I still haven't seen..!

kugbabbar 𒆬 𒌓 : silver in Sumerian (kaspum in Akkadian). 'kug' means 'metal', and 'babbar' 'white', same sign also means 'bright' - and the basic meaning is 'sun'.

Giš 𒄑 'tree' in Sumerian.
Mesopotamia doesn't have many trees, and kings often wrote how they got Lebanese cedar by going through great trouble. I find it a bit funny as a person living in a country consisting mostly forest :)

bēlu(m): 'lord, master, owner' in Akkadian. Here written with the usual way, with the logogram EN (= 'lord' in Sumerian). It's very often used word in cuneiform tablets we have: the standard form of addressing your superior (king or other boss)
