Natural materials in the outdoor classroom provide so many opportunities to build big muscles, expand theories, experience trial and error, explore problem solving, collaborate, … wait a second … oh yeah … it’s all about ‘play’!

A often has something from home she keeps with her throughout the day. Lately, she comes every day with her well loved book. We notice the difference in her art when she uses her imagination and when she uses a visual resource. So did she!❤️this #LearningChat this #UniquePerson

@weatherproofkid #learningchat TFL bus stops have become my toddler current fascination. Bus numbers; destinations; and bus stop flags with the letter code. A huge interest in numbers & letters from that. Got me thinking that they could be more kid friendly to help learning on the go.
@busylittleminds @savingthreads Absolutely against testing at such a young age - it shouldn't even be up for discussion #learningchat
@busylittleminds Absolutely against the testing. It makes me incredibly upset to think about it. Too much pressure on them at such a young age has the chance to suck the joy out of learning for them, before they’ve even discovered it. #learningchat
@FlexitSurrey @busylittleminds Exactly - they are all individuals, what suits one won’t suit them all. I’m slightly concerned what happens when he goes into year one and it gets more formal. #learningchat
@dofitforthekids @busylittleminds I'll have to look into buying one. My son would love it - and yes, it absolutely will end up in the bath 😂#learningchat
@dofitforthekids @busylittleminds When my daughter started Reception, she was mature enough for it at 4 but my son was a different story. You do see them grow but I'd rather them have free play for a longer period of time before starting formal education #learningchat
@FlexitSurrey @busylittleminds A kiddy one - ends up in the bath a lot too but most things do if they don’t have batteries! #learningchat
@FlexitSurrey @busylittleminds Q3 - agreed @FlexitSurrey Although my son has definitely flourished from going to school, so although I didn’t want him to go at 4 - I can see how he has benefitted from it. #learningchat
Q3: I think it’s fine as long as they are enjoying it and it is more a game than anything. My son’s nursery doesn’t force anything but the children that are curious about letters/numbers are introduced to phonics in the same way for those that enjoy art or building #learningchat
@dofitforthekids @busylittleminds I like that idea. Is it a kiddy scale or a regular one? #learningchat
@busylittleminds Numicon is great, although I believe it’s a little pricey. She got him a set of balancing scales ⚖️ and he loves weighing his toys to see what balances. #learningchat
@busylittleminds @dofitforthekids My son is fascinated by them, so it's an opportunity to work through the numbers with him. Nothing fancy but just something fun he enjoys #learningchat
@busylittleminds @numberblocks It’s really great, I wish it had been on when I was at school - it makes so much more sense than a silly worksheet! #learningchat
@busylittleminds Q3. It's fine if it's done in a playful context but I'm not a fan of starting school at such a young age. If I had my way, I'd like see children start school from 6 onwards #learningchat
@busylittleminds Again, we talk about numbers all the time when it’s relevant to what we’re doing, like when cooking or measuring something. We also have some great kids games that involve counting. Just a simple game of snakes and ladders for example. #learningchat
