That’s a good point. There’s a new generation of #photographers that expect better practices from #publishers and #galleries. #MartinParr had the opportunity to challenge an appalling #racist trope, but apparently chose not to.

@JohnWMacPherson @rupephoto @DanielCBlight @PaulTHalliday Especially when photographing other cultures, religions or communities, it is important to be sensitive and respectful, and giving a fair truthful portrayal. Parr has shown immense insensitivity to the black community which I think illustrates poor photographic skills.
The #DannyBakerAward is currently in development. Still working on nominations criteria and identifying a suitable prize.

But this isn’t about ‘what you saw’, this is about the experiences people of colour have on seeing such revoltingly #racist visual imagery. If you don’t understand that, then expand your understanding, speak with people who do.

@PaulTHalliday Some people maybe offended by this juxtaposition of images, some people are also racists. I saw this & thought how the mountain gorilla is under threat by the growth in humans on the planet. Some people don’t care about other species. Some don’t see racism everywhere either
I wouldn’t say that’s the case. The 2017 book clearly indicates that it was edited by #MartinParr. As they say in publishing - “if you edit it, you own it.”

I’d be interested to know how combining an image of an elderly Black woman with a gorilla foregrounds a debate about social injustice and discrimination. Point is, the book was published in its edited form in 2017.

@PaulTHalliday The original was published 1967. Pictures by Gian Butturini and there's a bit in the blurb that says, about the pictures,"...which evoke not only the atmosphere in the capital in the late 1960s but also Butturini’s own disenchantment with social injustice and discrimination."
