Dong New Year is a traditional festival among the Dong people in the southern counties of #Liping, #Congjiang, and #Rongjiang in southeastern #Guizhou. It is a time for the Dong people to pray for the blessings of their ancestors, celebrate family reunions, and give thanks for the harvest. In 2011, it was included in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
💥What to Do During Dong New Year:
🔹Welcoming Guests at the Village Gate: On major holidays or when important guests visit, the youth of the Dong village dress in traditional attire and set up barriers outside the village gate, singing road-blocking songs and offering road-blocking wine to "block" the guests. The guests must sing or drink the wine to enter the village, creating a fun and ceremonial atmosphere.
🔹Song Transmission at the Drum Tower: The Dong people often say, "Food nourishes the body, while songs nourish the heart." In their leisure time, villagers gather under the drum tower to sing and chat, sitting around the bonfire. The singing echoes through the air, capturing the lively atmosphere and everyday life with the gentle melody of the songs.
🔹Sacrificial Ceremony for Sasa: On Dong New Year, the Zhaoxing Dong Village holds a grand sacrificial ceremony to honor "Sasui," the goddess of the Dong people, to express gratitude for her blessings. "Sasui" is revered as the deity and hero of the Dong people and the highest protector of the village deity.
🔹Grand Parade in Traditional Costume: The Dong Grand Song, a cultural gem of the Dong people, was included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2009. On the day of the event, Dong people from surrounding villages gather in Zhaoxing Dong Village, showcasing vibrant folk performances, including Lusheng performance and lotus flower dance, among others.
🔹Dong Thousand-People Long Table Feast: The "He Long Banquet," also known as the Long Table Banquet, is the most formal hospitality tradition of the Dong people. The table is filled with local delicacies, and Dong girls in traditional dress sing toasting songs to serve drinks. The event is full of laughter and joy, fully displaying the charm of Dong culture.
🔹2024 Village Song Festival: Village song teams from neighboring villages gather here to perform on stage, singing the praises of beautiful Zhaoxing and celebrating Dong New Year. The Dong people express their love and longing for a better life with their pure and melodious voices.
