Moving across the world, you naturally expect the initial adjustment to be tough. You anticipate missing the chatter, spontaneous visits, the extended family, and the warmth of a home where you never had to face life alone. What you don't foresee is that, even after twenty years, that faint echo of loneliness can still sit quietly beside you. You can build a whole life—routines, habits—and still realize that when life really hits hard, the hands available to help are few and far between.
And then, life throws more at you.
When distance pulls your spouse to another country, stretching months into over a year of living separate, the familiar quiet turns heavy. Long-distance isn't just about missing someone at the end of the day; it’s about shouldering the full weight of a shared life on your own.
It’s waking up to manage the kids, keeping your career on track, keeping the household afloat, and bracing against harsh weather and a relentless commute—while bearing the quiet toll on your body and mind. When your energy runs low, and your health starts to dip, there's no stopping. You have to keep going, even without the comforting presence of the one person you wish could be right beside you. You become the anchor, the engine, the safe harbour for everyone else, even as you wonder who’s there to hold you up.
In those moments when all you want is a shoulder, a helping hand, or just the familiar face from home to say, "I’ve got this," it’s often responsibilities that show up instead.
You push through because you have to. You wake up each day, put on a brave face for your children, step into your work, and tackle endless tasks, all while exhausted. Beneath that quiet resolve is a deep exhaustion—not from a lack of love or resilience, but from missing the warmth of closeness, shared burdens, and the simple comfort of having someone support you when your body and heart are tired of being the strong one.
To anyone carrying a home, a family, their health, and a life across oceans alone—your quiet strength doesn’t go unnoticed, even when the days seem impossibly long.
