17 #Life_Learnings from 17 Years of The Marginalian by : Maria Popova - Embrace open-mindedness and the ability to change one's mind, valuing understanding over being right. - Avoid pursuing prestige, status, money, or approval solely, as these extrinsic motivators can distract from fulfilling, intrinsic rewards. - Practice generosity with time, resources, credit, and words, valuing understanding and celebration over criticism. - Incorporate stillness through meditation, walks, and creative daydreaming, valuing sleep and self-respect. - Believe people when they reveal their character, but reject others' misguided assumptions about your own identity. - Prioritize presence over productivity, fostering joy and wonder in daily life as opposed to a sole focus on efficiency. - Accept that worthwhile endeavors take time, challenging the culture of immediacy and superficial success. - Seek and revisit people, ideas, and books that magnify your spirit, using them as both remedy and preventative measure for spiritual malaise. - Embrace idealism, contributing to a culture that uplifts rather than panders to superficial demands. - Actively combat cynicism within oneself and in interactions with others, promoting largehearted, constructive, rational faith in human growth. - Question and test your inner and outer models of the universe against reality, acknowledging the incompleteness of our understanding. - Acknowledge the infinite variations of beautiful lives, fostering forgiveness and empathy in deep relationships. - Choose joy actively, even in the face of challenges, focusing on small delights and maintaining a positive focus. - Aim to outgrow oneself, moving beyond self-concern to a state of wonder. - Practice "unselfing," reducing tedious self-concern and promoting a focus beyond oneself. - Recognize that efforts of the heart are eventually rewarded, though perhaps not in expected ways, and utilize life's disappointments as compost for new possibilities.
