New #paleomagnetic data indicate that #lithospheric #movements, may be in the form of modern #platetectonics, occurred significantly #earlier than previously known. Earth's plate #tectonics form a fundamental basis for all #geologicalprocesses that shape conditions on our planet. These include phenomena such as weather, #climate, #biodiversity, and the Earth's #atmosphere. However, it was always a subject of debate whether lithospheric movements took place already during the very early stages of the #youngEarth. A. R. Brenner et al. (2026) collected paleomagnetic data from ,#rocks in #WesternAustralia, dating back approximately 3.4 billion years, and compared them with previously known samples of similar age from South #Africa The results revealed diverging #paleolatitudes, leading the authors to conclude that two distinct #crustalblocks had moved differently relative to the same #magneticpole. According to the researchers, this movement occurred at #speeds comparable to those of modern #continental drift. This indicates that the earliest continental plate movements took place significantly earlier than generally assumed by the scientific community. However, it remains uncertain whether this marked the onset of the gradual plate tectonic processes that persist today, or if it represented an instance of earlier #tectonicactivity unrelated to modern continental drift. Furthermore, the researchers were able to link the observed plate movements to a #geomagnetic #reversal. A #geomagneticreversal, the natural process in which our planet's North and #SouthPoles swap positions, occurs at intervals of several thousand years. Earth's magnetic field is generated by the so-called geodynamo. Pole reversals are triggered by changes in this #magneticfield; this field should not be envisioned as static, but rather as highly dynamic, characterized by chaotic movements within the Earth's #outercore. This core consists of liquid metal set in motion by the Earth's rotation, thereby generating #electriccurrents. #Geoid anomalies are fantastic to study the internal density of the #Earth and its dynamic state. In this paper, we address the difficult and long-standing problem of isolating the contributions of #lithospheric and upper #mantle density to the full geoid. Link to paper below.
