During the engagement, Mr Jack reaffirmed Eskom's commitment to removing communities from load reduction through the accelerated rollout of smart meters. To date, Eskom has successfully removed more than 400 000 customers from load reduction across Gauteng through the installation of smart meters and network interventions. He explained that once smart meters have been installed at 30% of customers supplied by a feeder, Eskom is able to remove that area from load reduction while continuing installations for the remaining customers. He urged residents to support Eskom teams and allow them access to install smart meters, as resistance to installations delays the process and prevents communities from benefiting from improved electricity supply. Mr Jack also highlighted the importance of paying for electricity and urged customers to refrain from illegal connections, meter tampering and bypassing. These activities place lives at risk, damage critical electricity infrastructure, contribute to outages and undermine Eskom's ability to provide reliable electricity to paying customers. In closing, he called on communities, government, law enforcement agencies and Eskom to work together to protect electricity infrastructure and combat electricity theft.
