Local government is the true grassroots empowerment of people and the real nursery of #democracy, where future leadership is groomed.
#Karachi is the biggest example of this failure, divided among multiple authorities, yet without a truly empowered mayor. A mega metropolitan city of 30 million cannot be effectively managed without unity of command, accountability, and resources under elected local representatives.

True, the Mayor of London and the Mayors of all Boroughs are fully empowered, with genuine devolution of authority, and they deliver.
In #Pakistan, however, empowered #local_governments remain absent. Except in #Sindh, there are no elected local governments functioning in #KhyberPakhtunkhwa, #Punjab, or #Balochistan. Take the recent floods in #KP as an example: not a single mayor of the affected areas was visible, cause there are none, and astonishingly the absence of elected local government seemed almost acceptable.
In #Karachi, the situation is complex. The city is fragmented across multiple agencies and authorities, leaving the #MayorKarachi without unity of command. While responsibility is publicly assumed to be with the Mayor, the office lacks both the jurisdiction and authority to deliver.
Sindh’s local government system must evolve further, with genuine devolution of powers to the Mayor and Town Chairmen. It is high time Karachi, the capital of Sindh, the country’s only true megacity and its hub of trade and commerce, was governed like other great metropolitan cities of the world.
