To mark #londonhatweek and #worldhatwalk on 27th April, a picture of a young #royalfusilier in dress uniform from 1922 complete with bearskin from our archive. The bearskin is a tall fur cap derived from mitre caps worn by grenadier regiments in the 17th and 18th centuries. They were initially worn only by grenadiers but were later used by several other regiments, including #fusiliers, in the 19th century. The bearskin cap continued to see use in battle during the mid-19th century, although by the 20th century, it was only used for parade dress. By the time our photograph was taken, the bearskin and full dress uniform of the Royal Fusiliers was mainly worn by bandsmen or by officers on special formal occasions.
