Looking for a lunchtime read? Here’s a fascinating thread from @ThamesDiscovery - a virtual walk along the #Deptford foreshore. #LowTideLockdown
Hi Everyone, @josh_frost89 here for today’s ##LowTideLockdown exploring the rich and complex maritime history of #Deptford. We’ll be taking a virtual walk along the foreshore from Watergate Street up to St George’s Stairs.

A fragment of slipway, also built of reused ship's timbers survives on the foreshore here. Next to it is the culvert of the Earl's Sluice. Our plan was to record it this week as part of our scheduled fieldwork season. #LowTideLockdown

We really enjoyed this #FestivalofArchaeology #LowTideLockdown tour of a few of London's riverstairs.
It's part of the exciting #ThamesCRaFT project with COLAS and @ThamesDiscovery volunteers. Take a look https://t.co/hOK4Lq7cLZ
We've reached Custom House where volunteers have surveyed two stairs and causeways: the monumental east stair (left) built for the Custom House (opened in 1817), and the west stair where the space is now infilled with concrete #LowTideLockdown

...thank you to our amazing #ThamesCRaFT volunteers from @COLAS_London and @ThamesDiscovery who have been so active in the project and even continued with online research during lockdown. Nothing would be possible without you! #LowTideLockdown

On 13 April 1661, Samuel Pepys says that the ‘great stone steps’ at Tower Stair were being repaired ahead of Charles II’s coronation. Volunteers recorded the remains of a stair - could it be linked to the one Pepys mentions? #LowTideLockdown

We go past St Katherine Docks & come to Tower Bridge where Iron Gate Stairs were. Tower Stairs were often used by Samuel Pepys who lived nearby. Today the riverstair is under the Tower Millennium Pier. 1746 Map @LayersofLondon #LowTideLockdown

We've walked now to Hermitage Stairs. The old stair was replaced by a modern one, now unusable. Once an annual watermen’s Regatta took place between the watermen of Hermitage and those of Alderman’s Stairs with a new wherry as the prize #LowTideLockdown

Today not all the riverstairs still give access to the foreshore - when no longer maintained they erode rapidly and become dangerous. Compare Wapping Dock stairs and causeway today (left) and in 1971 (📷 Collage LMA) #LowTideLockdown

In 19thC, when more tall warehouses were built along the river, they respected the right of way to the riverstairs creating narrow passages between the buildings - this can still be seen at Pelican Stairs, New Crane Stairs and others #LowTideLockdown

From the riverstair passengers could also get a wherry to take them to, or from, the ships moored out in the river. A ship’s location on the #Thames would often be described as ‘lying off’ a particular stair. (📷National Maritime Museum) #LowTideLockdown

In 1829, #Wapping watermen carried around 3,700 passengers daily over the #Thames. Passengers could wait for a wherry at the waterfront inns such as the Town of Ramsgate beside Wapping Old Stairs, or the Prospect of Whitby by Pelican Stairs #LowTideLockdown

By 1996 only fragments of the #RatcliffCross causeway remained (📷@COLAS volunteers) showing how important it is to record features before they disappear. Today concrete steps have replaced the granite ones and the causeway has gone #LowTideLockdown

Our next stop is #RatcliffCross. In 16th C seaman/privateer Martin Frobisher is said to have left from here to Canada. In 1899, Joseph Pennell drew the stair & #causeway that passengers walked on to cross the muddy foreshore to a wherry #LowTideLockdown

100 years later #LimehouseHole had changed. In 1870 a floating pier, one of many along the Thames, was built for the paddle steamer service. Today stone stairs have replaced the wooden ones and the pier has gone (📷1908 © LMA) #LowTideLockdown
