After the #M2S2 survey last September focusing on Maurolicus muelleri, #IMMErSE2023 gives us a good opportunity to get an idea of the whole mesopelagic community!
It is a really pleasant experience to get your hands of those fish after seeing them mostly in pictures! ๐
On top of ๐ณ, #IMMErSE2023 is also doing night fishing ๐๐ฃ where the nocturnal team looks at zooplankton ๐ฆ, fish ๐, squids ๐ฆ and everything they can find!
Deep hauls reveal a lot of #mesopelagic fish not often looked at!

It was such a great opportunity to collect, process and analyse #eDNA ๐งฌ samples on the #M2S2 survey and let the #acoustics ๐ป team know if they were missing any species. Integrating these two methods could provide a clearer picture of the meso community ๐
Working 24/7 during the survey means that we can witness the dial vertical migration at dawn and dusk! The #M2S2 survey also integrated an #eDNA component handled by @MaddalenaTibone from @GMIT_Research. Will be interesting to see which species were missing from the catches!

The #M2S2 survey on #RVTomCrean ended this weekend. We did find M. muelleri layers and the data acquired should tell us more about their distribution๐บ๏ธ Thanks to all the crew and scientific team for making it succesful! @MarineInst @RVMarineInst
Highlights below:
Fun times and hard work on the #M2S2 survey. We transformed the CTD lab in a filtering station for phytoplankton and eDNA ๐

First sequencing run of #eDNA samples on #M2S2 using ONT's MinION. We found multiple meso species, mainly mueller's pearlside, that was detected both with acoustics and biological sampling. Also, eDNA tells us there are blue sharks roaming around ๐ฆ @Thibault_Cariou
A little bit of night time action on the #M2S2 survey. ๐ Some species migrate vertically and move to the surface to feed once the light is gone. It translated in our haul with a higher species diversity! Aside pearlsides: Greenland argentine, hatchetfish, baracudina, glass eel
First sampling day of the #M2S2 survey! We found an acoustic mark early this morning and had the chance to make one of the first #RVTomCrean haul! ๐ฃ This allows me to present the species we're after in this survey: Maurolicus muelleri @MarineInst @RVMarineInst
On board the brand new R/V Tom Crean for the Multidisciplinary Mesopelagic Scouting Survey #M2S2. Starting today with a calibration step in Killary Fjord and heading out to the shelf break afterwards! @MarineInst @RVMarineInst. On the menu: acoustics, eDNA, mesopelagic fish ๐
