PortSide ED Carolina Salguero will be available to answer questions. She was the only photojournalist to document the boatlife evacuation of thousands that morning. That was one helluva storm. We had a gust of 68 mph according to our weather station, but I expect that wasn't the highest wind. The #MaryWhalen and @SloopClearwater are OK. We heard some other boats did not fare so well.

The race is this weekend and can be seen from the west side of governor's island or from commercial spectator boats selling tickets. For info on another sailing race, see our next post about the Red Hook Regatta this Saturday 1-5 PM in Valentino park where youth race model boats they made themselves.

We are again trying to get permission from the @NYCEDC to turn the weed patch south of the Mary Whalen into a nature center with amenities for birds, pollinators, etc. and smart cams so you can learn more about our urban, waterfront wildlife while supporting it. ๐งโ๏ธ Icy maritime action around the #MaryWhalen just now. The ferry mentioned, the Phyllis Ann, belongs to 6th Boro Marine, a start-up to do blue highway work. She's from the 1950s, recently re-powered, and worked in Maine so she's built for ice and has been doing ice-breaking in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
