The traditional #pottery workshop of the late master potter #FawzialFakhoury in the town of #BeitShabeb, #Matn, was demolished. Known locally as "al-Bardousha," the workshop, estimated to be 600 years old, was one of the 40 pottery workshops that Beit Shabeb was once famous for. It was also the workshop of the last master potter, Fawzi, who inherited it from his grandfather and remained there to revive his craft until his passing in late 2020. The Founoun foundation in Beit Chabab had paid tribute to Master Fawzi last year, after his passing. The foundation president Bernard Ghoussoub had attempted to protect “al-Bardousha" and classify it under the Directorate of Antiquities, but his efforts came too late. The space, which preserved Beit Shabeb’s heritage, could have been turned into a museum that tells the story of the town’s pottery, but instead it was demolished and the town residents were given no clear reason for the destruction. The demolition of "al-Bardousha" today and the passing of Fawzi al-Fakhoury four years ago mark the end of a chapter of pottery in Beit Shabeb.
