Probably one of the most well-known books ever published, and certainly a popular book for visitors to the #MBALibrary, is this first edition copy of the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin. Given to a mystery recipient it may even have been signed by Darwin himself ✏️

There are two members of #MBALibrary staff and a group of dedicated volunteers who help look after the library and the collection within it 🌟
Opened in 1888, the #MBALibrary was originally a single room. The then Director put a note out in the local paper asking for donations and the library has continued growing ever since. We now have over 15,000 books and 4500 journal titles 📖

It might be December but no (marine) snow at the #MBALibrary yet, so how about some Christmas Island crab species instead? These illustrations demonstrate the variety of crustacean life on the island and many of them can be found there today.
We have many incredible scientific illustrations within our #MBALibrary collection and yes, a lot are medusae! Here are some deep-sea ones studied during the HMS Challenger Expedition. One volume (on siphonophores) was even signed by Ernst Haeckel himself.
In August 1887 the first issue of the Journal of the Marine Biological Association UK (JMBA) was published. Now in its 135th year, the JMBA, published by @CambridgeCore is an international journal containing research on all aspects of marine biology. #MBALibrary
From 1927-1929 C.M. Yonge led the Great Barrier Reef expedition whilst working at the MBA. The reports held in the #MBALibrary include many illustrations such as these of Leiognathus equulus and Arothron stellatus. We don't ~just~ post illustrations of medusae!
Did you know we have libraries within the #MBALibrary? In the past we have been gifted personal collections from people such as the renowned marine biologist Marie Lebour, whose research was conducted @thembauk
Art is a great way to connect people to marine science and conservation so in the #MBALibrary we have cushions by @hannahwisdomtex , using admiralty charts from our collection as well as a quilt by Susan Denton, daughter of Sir Eric Denton, a former Director of the MBA.
