David Katsarava, my best friend, who was peacefully participating in a protest in Tbilisi, was tortured by officers of the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs, which could not have happened without direct orders from top officials. Since the authorities continue to write texts in English about their democratic nature, I will also ask here in English whether the torture is also a part of that “democracy” they are talking about? The torture that was inflicted on a patriot of Georgia and my best friend, David Katsarava. Standing still, a man known throughout the country as a fighter against the occupation of Georgia and a volunteer who fought in Ukraine during the first months of the invasion is grabbed and dragged into a crowd of special forces officers by Ministry of Internal Affairs employees. He disappears. Over the next hour, David is first dragged to a nearby street, handcuffed. He hears the order: “make a circle.” The police beat him, forming a circle and using their feet and hands with special gloves with plastic inserts, like brass knuckles. Then David is dragged into a minivan. Every 5-10 minutes, 2-3 officers enter and beat him, breaking the bones in his face: the bone under his eye, his nose, his jaw. Three times they return and continue to hit and hit and hit his head and face. Without reason. Just because they were ordered to. Ordered by who? Kremlin? GoG? In the end, they strangle him with his own scarf. They lift his head and film it all to send to someone. This is not “dispersing a protest.” The person was simply standing, as seen in the video, in front of the police and doing nothing. Torture. An act of intimidation by employees of the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs. This is not the first case of violence; there have been other beatings, unlawful use of special means during the protests of 2019, when we, standing peacefully, were shot with rubber bullets and gassed. Recently: beatings of NGO employees and politicians at rallies and near homes. The case of my friend David Katsarava, a true patriot of Georgia, is a crime, torture, an order that must be investigated when Georgia has a normal independent court and the police will protect people instead of beating them to blood. Many things can be forgiven. This cannot. Journalists, politicians, activists, officials, friends, every time you see posts or meet someone from the current Georgian government, ask them why torture is being used in Georgia under their leadership? Is that the democracy and European way they are talking about?
