Today the #MIJailsTaskForce is delivering their final recommendations in Lansing after months of meetings. We wanted to share some excerpts from our ED @A_S_Alexander's statement to the Task Force this morning:
95% of the people held in Genesee County Jail in Flint are unsentenced, and many have been awaiting sentencing for years. The #MIJailsTaskForce visited the jail at the end of October, and our Founding ED @A_S_Alexander provided a report back of the visit. Read more here:
Administrators at Genesee County’s jail estimate that at least 40 percent of the pretrial population has been incarcerated for over a year. And the record there—the longest time they’ve ever had someone awaiting trial at that jail—is 7.5 years.
