Spider mite damage on strawberry appears as stippling or bronzing of the leaves; leaves may turn yellow & drop. Webbing on underside of leaves is also a sign of infestation. Spidermites thrive in warm dry conditions. Early management is needed to prevent yield loss #Mites

About tiny #mites (#Histiostomatidae, #Astigmata) that resemble semi-transparent glass sculptures, a feature that allows them to respire through their skin, thus eliminating the need for specialized respiratory organs. The #species #Histiostoma #sapromyzarum, highly dependent on #environments rich in #fungi, will be introduced here.
Histiostoma sapromyzarum is #associated with various #arthropods, which transport the mite from one habitat to another on their bodies (#phoresy). The species is primarily found on #beetles of the #Carabidae and #centipedes of the genus #Lithobius.
There is a #complexinteraction between the mites, their #microenvironment and fungi.
All #developmentalstages of Histiostoma saprimyzarum carry #fungusspores. But it is still not yet deeper studied, whether #deutonymphs, which are the transport-stage, regularly carry spores of specific fungi and whether they carry them in specific areas in their bodies, or whether different spores of different fungus taxa appear randomly on different body parts of the #dispersalstage (deutonymph). I generally assume that, as in the bark-beetle clade of Histiostomatidae, spores are typically primarily carried by deutonymphs and germinate in the final #habitat and there represent the food of the free living mites stages, which develop and reproduce there. The deutonymph itself is dispersed via phoresy (#phoresis), which means that these mites attach themselves to larger and more mobile arthropods using special #suctioncups and are thus transported to new habitats. If the deutonymphs themselves carry small #passengers on their bodies during this phoretic transport, in this case fungal spores, this must be named #hyperphoresy.
Histiostoma sapromyzarum is a species characterized by #ecologicalflexibility. According to the acarologist R. Scheucher (1957), the species occurs via deutonymphs not only on various phoretic transporters but also in diverse habitats such as decomposing fruiting bodies of Basidiomycota fungi and deadwood. I collected the species in November 2025 in Saarland (Western Germany) from a heavily #mosscovered #treestump in the middle of a #mixedforest (#riparianforest) dominated by spruce. I still house the samples in a small terrarium and add moistened potato slices as a culture medium for bacteria and spores. From February 2026 onward, I observed that all developmental stages of Histiostoma sapromyzarum were present on all #potato slices, which were in an advanced state of #decomposition. Since only males were found in some places, I assume that they reach adulthood before the females. Mate guarding may be practiced on females, but id still not yet closer examined.
Adult females become significantly larger than males when carrying eggs.
The mites' preferred habitat on the rotting potato pieces placed amidst the original substrate is visibly moist areas with a visible predominance of "mushy"-looking #fungalgrowth (#Ascomycota). In #lightmicroscopic views, the mite stages are often seen surrounded by macro#conidia (the asexual reproduction stage of some Ascomycota taxa). Fungal-infested areas appear "mushy" and lighter in color than their surroundings because the mite stages inhibit fungal growth using their own produced #fungicides. This apparently allows the mites to #filterfeed on fungal components, which are then mostly mixed with bacterial growth. This species' preference for clearly visible fungal-infested areas is more pronounced than in other species of the Histiostomatidae.
