One thing that gets completely missed when politicians talk about property taxes is renters. They act like if you don't own the building, you don't pay the tax. Bullshit. Landlords don't magically absorb higher property taxes forever. Those costs eventually make their way into rent, just like insurance, utilities, repairs and everything else. That's why my property-tax reform includes renters too. If we're actually reducing the cost of owning and maintaining rental property, some of that savings needs to reach the people writing the rent check every month. One of the biggest problems with American healthcare is that we have built an entire system around managing problems instead of actually trying to solve them. You go in with a problem. You get bounced around. Another appointment. Another copay. Another prescription. Another referral. Another prior authorization. Another bill. Six months later you may still not know what the hell was actually wrong in the first place. My healthcare reform starts with a principle I think should be obvious: treat the problem, not manage it forever. That means putting more emphasis on getting the diagnosis right, finding underlying causes when possible, early intervention, prevention, appropriate testing, and coordinating care instead of forcing patients to become their own full-time case managers. It also means admitting that affordability is part of healthcare. A treatment somebody cannot afford might as well not exist for that person. Medical debt can destroy a family financially even when they did everything right, carried insurance, worked, and paid their premiums. Medicaid needs the same kind of accountability. I support protecting healthcare for people who legitimately need it, but protecting Medicaid also means protecting it from fraud, improper payments, duplicate coverage, bad managed-care practices, and government systems that take forever to update basic information. I don't accept the argument that our only two choices are endlessly throwing more money into healthcare or ripping coverage away from people. That's lazy politics. Fix the damn system. Make it easier for doctors to practice medicine instead of paperwork. Make insurers and managed-care organizations answer for unnecessary delays. Give patients a real appeals process when care is denied. Go after fraud without treating every legitimate patient like a criminal. Protect people from crushing medical debt while still expecting accountability throughout the system. Pennsylvania can't fix the entire American healthcare system by itself. I’m baaacckkkk. I took most of the weekend to step away from social media for a little bit, spend some time with the family, work on finishing up the website, and honestly just sit back and look at where this campaign is and where we go from here. I also got to sit back and watch the professional-wrestling-style match that the Garrity v. Shapiro race is turning into. Attack, counterattack, outrage, dramatic music, repeat. At this point, so much of it feels more made for TV than made for actually governing Pennsylvania. And I’ll be honest, I’m getting pretty damn pissed about it. People across this state are still getting crushed by property taxes, utility bills, groceries, insurance, housing costs, and the everyday cost of just trying to live. Families are still struggling, small businesses are still getting squeezed, and people are wondering how much more expensive everything is going to get. Meanwhile, the two biggest campaigns in the race seem more interested in beating the hell out of each other on television than explaining how they are going to fix any of it. https://t.co/b3jsHgqlsV I went through Pennsylvania’s proposed health regulations, and there are parts of it I can understand. But there are also parts I absolutely do not support. The biggest problem for me is simple: the Department of Health should not have more power than the people we actually elect. DOH needs to be able to react quickly when there is a real outbreak. I have no problem with that. If there is an immediate threat to life or public safety, they should be able to act. But that authority needs limits. What I do not support is broadening the rules so an unelected agency can impose major statewide restrictions, expand its own authority, or keep emergency powers going without elected oversight. And one part of this really stands out. After Pennsylvania’s statewide school mask mandate was struck down in court, DOH now says that decision helped influence these proposed changes to expand its disease-control authority. That should concern people. If the Department believes it needs broader statewide powers, then take that to the legislature and make the case publicly. Do not rewrite the rules and give yourself more power. I also have major concerns with creating a statewide vaccine database, forcing medical treatment, entering private homes or businesses without proper legal authority, cutting parents out of decisions involving their children, and using private medical information beyond the reason it was collected. Public health matters. So do privacy, parental rights, due process, and limits on government power. Pennsylvania should absolutely be prepared for the next real emergency. But being prepared does not mean giving an unelected agency a blank check. I would send this proposal back and demand something much narrower, much clearer, and much more accountable.
