Had a great time listening to @BethOsborneT4A from @T4America, followed by an incredible panel, at the @BicycleColo Moving People Forward conference today!
Such great discussion about reforming the state's one-sided transportation system, and how we can accomplish it!
#MPF22

And that's it for the panel! Final closing remarks from Jack Todd, our Director of Comms and Policy. Huge thanks to our panelists and to everyone engaging in the chat. We're hosting small follow-ups in the coming weeks. More details will be available on website tomorrow. #MPF22
Question regarding state highways in metro areas that often act as main roads. Shoshana says there's a need to break barriers between state and local decision makers. Opening up conversation with the community. #MPF22
Corinne says in order to get more people biking, walking, taking transit, there needs to be space given to them and priority in terms of timing and design. These modes need to be made safe, reliable, convenient, and demonstrably the best option. #MPF22
Beth continues that focus is not just on list of projects but also design approaches (which states and cities have flexibility in considering), and seeing what current design is. Focus on slowing speeds where there's development. #MPF22
Beth: "I can't function without the feedback from those advocates." She includes advocates who work in public works, departments of transportation who are trying to create change in their own systems. They have insight on barriers and opportunities. #MPF22
Shoshana goes back to Corinne's comments about reimagining partnerships with community. CDOT has a program called Revitalizing Main Streets. Local communities getting grants to expand patios, create community street space, even on state-managed highways. #MPF22
Debra says at RTD, she has to understand what her customers' pain points are. At RTD, they're going to where the people are, folks using transit to understand their firsthand experience. Expanding outreach for people of all backgrounds, experiences, identities. #MPF22
Opportunity to reimagine streets is opportunity to think about relationships, what people need. #MPF22
Examples from NACTO's grant program: In Portland, partnership w/ community and Rosewood Initiative to convert parking lot to community plaza space. Minneapolis partnership with indigenous community group. Enduring connection. Madison, WI collab. to support street vendors. #MPF22
Next question: how transportation can address community needs today and tomorrow. Corinne sees how during pandemic, cities have expanded biking, outdoor dining, plazas for gathering. NACTO supports cities through grant program to "reimagine street space." #MPF22
Corinne: Also focusing on today and not future. Need to consider stopping momentum of old projects planned years ago that don't meet our needs right now. Let's think outside of silos and connect transpo. w/ land use, housing, public health. Needs are interconnected. #MPF22
Beth: we need to stop trying to "solve congestion." Says it's the wrong measure. Speed of the travel is irrelevant. "Is it our job to make a commute for someone who chose to move 30 miles outside of town easy?...if you live far away, you're going to travel longer." #MPF22
Naomi's first question. New infrastructure funding is massive. What do agencies need to stop doing in order to have enough resources to realign transpo investments w/ community needs, and CO's own goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions? #MPF22
Back to @BethOsborneT4A. Moving People Forward to her means connecting people to opportunities, jobs, etc. no matter their income, where they live, how they're traveling, physical ability etc. #MPF22
Debra Johnson is General Manager and CEO of Regional Transportation District (RTD)—transit in Denver metro area. Sees RTD as providing transportation as access to opportunity. "We have to invest in the people who are running the transit network." #MPF22
Moving People Forward is off and running and Beth Osborne is speaking the hard truths about induced demand. @T4America #mpf22
