At the time, 10+ years ago, it was unheard of to accept people for a masters without a bachelors. But Lorna Williams advocated for a path called "Exceptional Entry" where you can have a portfolio, demonstrate 10+ years of language activism instead of the bachelors #MSIL2018
A traditional masters: you finish high school, you do a bachelor's, and if you get good enough grades, you apply to a masters. But for our Masters of Indigenous Languages, it's not like other masters and these people needed to be in community rather than doing a BA #MSIL2018
One challenge is who holds the copyright, who holds the credit. We had one of those big grants and then found out that the work on the language didn't belong to the community, it "belonged" to the university. Which just felt wrong. #MSIL2018
Intergenerational transmission really important - one of the adult students brings her son who's in the child immersion program to class sometimes so they reinforce each other #MSIL2018
The universities have found the funds to do what they want to do, but they're not geared towards creating speakers who will teach their kids the language, which is what the communities want #MSIL2018
Universities can be helpful by filling out paperwork, getting grants so that teachers can focus on teaching and get paid #MSIL2018
Universities need to recognize that they're not the ones that hold all the knowledge, need to recognize all the work that the young people are doing and give them credits, pay teachers what they deserve, give back linguistic treasures being held in basements and offices #MSIL2018
When universities record stories, create resources or programs in our language, they get the copyright, and we should be the ones that keep the copyright, get the credit (not somewhere down in the fine print) - it's not just a McGill program #MSIL2018
We don't have any universities up north, why can't they create a satellite campus up north so that people don't have to leave their families to go south for university, loose touch with their languages #MSIL2018
The Welsh got help from the government to make books in their languauge, an office to make new terminology in the language, translator/interpreter group, a university that teaches Welsh, Welsh daycare
