The sudden appearance of the lake mystified the town, what was simply an open piece of barren land, was now a water-filled oasis around which an entire ecosystem had appeared overnight. And no, it hadn't rained, or a river hadn't broken its defiant ways to come find a still, quiet home here. The beautiful, serene water body had just... appeared.
Moonlight bounced off its mirror-like surface in the cold of the night, the opaline reflection diffusing into the mist-laden atmosphere. Deer were spotted drinking from it, their eyes shining like emeralds in the darkness. Occasionally a roar was heard, a pair of attentive ears were spotted in the grass that had grown all around. And even more rarely, the body to whom that roar belonged slithered through that low grass, pouncing out of the night, & taking a pair of emeralds along. And all this played out like a surreal spectacle without a ticket, right there, in their town.
The townsfolk meanwhile, were split in two; one half enjoyed it, & took in all this magic without questions, the other couldn't enjoy it at all, precisely, because of their questions. And when just as it had appeared, it vanished once fine day, the town was again split in two. Cafes and roadside joints were packed with groups discussing things into wee hours of the night. While the first half still basked in the magic, the second fought with each other over long, lengthy debates that stopped having anything to do with the lake after a few hours.
