Doing my morning book search, and came across this wonderful addition.
In fiction, we talk of the #machinespirit, the rogue AI, or the ghost in the machine, and I was amused to see that even a century ago we recognized that machines are not simply unthinking "machines".
"Who was that audacious man who first took upon himself the divine privilege of making tools and weapons for himself, instead of waiting for โnatureโ to provide them for him?" asks this book written in 1925... before tracking the history of that one thing that truly set man apart in all the Earth.
There are tool-using animals... ranging from birds who use sticks to get where their bill cannot, to apes and octopeds which actually make the tools they need... but in all cases they use those tools to do what they already were going to do. And this is why they never mastered fire.
Fire is the first step in changing your habits to suit the tools at hand. Cooked food is safer, easier to digest, stores better... but it is never necessary. You did not need to cook that, except that you do. Humans' ability to cook our food changed what we could eat. It took things that were completely out of our range... ranging from things that were simply toxic to things that our system couldn't process on a dare... and made it into part of our regular diet.
Yes, technically a human can live on leafy vegetables without cooking them... but I guarantee you can identify that person very, very quickly. A human can even live on some fruits, vegetables and very select versions of meat without cooking them. But civilization couldn't.
And that's what I mean. Animals can have tribal politics and even a limited version of civilization. They can discover new things and use them in their day to day live but only man puts themselves in a position where they have no other choice. Where they must have the tools or else they simply die. The author of this book assumed that, as we get more and more made, as we make ourselves more and more invulnerable to nature itself, we would someday make a world of supermen...
