Alfred Molteni (François Marie #AlfredMolteni, 1837–1907) ran the celebrated Paris optical firm that produced #MagicLanterns, projection lamps, slides and scientific instruments.
By the 1880s to the1890s Molteni’s catalogues and manuals show a wide range of projection accessories, so a table viewer to examine slides fits the firm’s product line and clientele (schools, museums, commercial lecturers, photographers).
This device called a Lanternoscope is intended for viewing images for quality, prior to projection. An illustration below. Designed to permit the viewing of 3-1/4" x 3-1/4" glass #lanternslides without the need for artificial light. Made of mahogany and nickel-plated brass.

THE LANTERNOSCOPE
The #Lanternoscope called in French 'Visionneuse de Table' or simply Visionneuse,appears in trade references for 1892 as a small table-mounted viewer #Molteni sold, so a user could inspect glass lantern slides before putting them into a projection apparatus. In short, it’s a quality-control / preview device for lantern slides — handy for checking composition, cropping, colouring / tinting, or whether the slide is broken or dusty prior to a show.
The Pedemascope was part of a 19th century fascination with optical toys, which were both entertainment and educational tools. Its compatibility with #MagicLanterns, widely used in educational lectures and parlor entertainment, suggests it was marketed for both home use and public demonstrations, possibly in schools, churches, or scientific societies. #opticaltoys #Victorianage
These Pedemascope images are found in ‘The Popular Educator- A Complete Encyclopaedia of Elementary, Advanced and Technical Education,’ Cassell, London, 1888, figures 3, 4, 5, p169.
Unlike the Thaumatrope, which used strings or a stick to spin the card, the Pedemascope's mahogany holder and semi-rotation mechanism made it a more sophisticated and durable device, possibly aimed at a middle-class or educational market. #opticaltoyhistory

William Friese-Greene was an early pioneer of motion pictures. His early work with magic lanterns paved the way for his experiments in film. One of his inventions was a two-color filming process he patented in 1905. #WilliamFrieseGreene #MagicLanterns #MotionPictures #Hollywood
#Motionpictures came to be as the result of numerous other inventions. A large segment of the discoverers came from the new field of photography. Many more came from those who worked with #magiclanterns.
My purpose here is not to induce controversy around the parentage of #cinema, or the difference between projected painted disks vs. disks with #photographs, or celluloid vs. sensitized paper strips. It's to provide factual data on the grounds of well documented material.
The #MagicLanterns below were painted sheet metal lanterns on four varnished copper legs with a varnished wood base. They had a porthole door on each side, a brass fireplace, long-dimension optical tube with two-wheel and rack-and-pinion lens and a spring-loaded sight glass.

You recall Beard made #MagicLanterns and designed a regulator that automated oxygen tanks to provide fuel for illumination. Beard had now stayed with the times and began taking a serious interest in the new business of #Cinematography.

#MagicLanterns come in all shapes & sizes. If you are a collector, you already know this. For the avid ‘Magic Lantern’ enthusiast and knowledge seeker, here are some of the oddest lanterns we have found over the last 3 centuries, like a car from 1902.
THE MAGIC LANTERN DID NOT DIE AWAY
Even up to 1956 we are finding in our research, build-able #magiclanterns for children made out of cardboard like the ones shown here. It may have been pushed aside but it has not disappeared.
Subjects were of the black magic or necromancy categories; ghosts, spirits, dead relatives or personalities & sometimes politicians. Techniques included the use of smoke; two or more #magiclanterns; rear projection; hidden projection; projection on glass, & on mirrors.
The ‘Phantasmagoria’ became an extremely popular piece of entertainment for children as well as adults. Its popularity soared throughout Europe, particularly in Germany but never as much as in France. The precursor to home entertainment.
